The National Foundation for Credit Counseling had a very interesting question in its December survey, according to a press release issued this week. It is this:
The majority of my financial problems have been:
The answers were:
- A. Self-inflicted (ex: overspending, financially unorganized, etc.) = 63%
- B. Caused by events beyond my control (ex: job loss, medical, etc.) = 37%
The press release also lists some ideas and steps that fit in with typical New Year’s resolutions to organize and take control of your finances.

I think a good portion may account for job loss, or medical issues, but after the two of those, there’s a lot of room to account for over spending, being irresponsible, or just using resources unwisely. My mother is retired, but now has a part time job for the past 6 months, and she has started calling out. She is financially unaware or refuses to see her financial issues, and resorts to the “woe is me” and all I ever hear is “There’s nothing to eat for dinner, and the bills are always late”. When I speak to her the next day, they are getting ready to go out or dinner. Very frustrating.
