There are a lot of coupons this week in the Sunday papers – I’m counting four books each in my home delivery editions of The Monroe Evening News and the Detroit Free Press.

The biggest trend I’m seeing in the stores and in the advertising fliers for the Monroe, Mich., area this week are tie-ins to football Sunday, otherwise known as Game Day, Game Time, Big Game, and whatever other name can be used without needing to seek permission to say Super Bowl in a promotion!

The offerings include tailgate and party food such as beer, pop, pizza, wings, chili and appetizers; along with serving dishes, hostess equipment and slow cookers.

Here’s the point I want to make on this topic:

Think beyond the football party as it will probably be Memorial Day before we see some of these items in heavy rotation again.

In particular, NASCAR fans should look for and snap up their favorite foods and beverages this week, as tailgate and party food is tailgate and party food. But the food promotions that tend to happen in conjunction with the Daytona 500 race tend to be NASCAR sponsors, which may or may not be tailgate and party food.

I just bought some Velveeta cheese and Ro-Tel today, with the intent to save them for a NASCAR viewing party. Our food for Super Bowl Sunday will be sub sandwiches, as the confirmation class at our church is hosting a sandwich sale.

And another hint: watch for clearance prices after this weekend on the football-themed serving platters and paper goods. The patterns and designs I’m seeing are generic enough that they’ll carry over very well to next fall’s tailgate and party needs, no matter what team colors you wear.

Other trending topics this week:

  • Baby supplies, diapers and baby food.
  • Pet supplies and pet food.
