Here’s what to look for as I review the grocery and drugstore ads for the Monroe, Mich., area:

  • Seafood, tuna, cheese and other Lent-friendly foods are easy to find in the supermarket specials this week as the Lenten season starts Wednesday. Be sure to look over post I had last week for a list of budget-friendly menu options. The Walmart flier this week also has recipes for Lenten dishes such as fish tacos and a buffalo crunch fish sandwich.
  • NASCAR and Daytona 500 sponsors are running a variety of promotions leading up to the start of racing season. Remember that these items often are everyday grocery and cleaning products and not necessarily party foods as we see with the Super Bowl promotions.
  • Other grocery items that can be found at good prices this week include frozen veggies, eggs, pop, canned soup, cereal, margarine, cooking oil, some cleaning supplies, some personal care products.
  • Valentine’s Day is Thursday, which means holiday promotions are very heavy now and clearance sales may be found starting Friday. My newspaper column Tuesday will focus on budget-friendly Valentine gift ideas – be sure to look for it here or in The Monroe Evening News!

I found two coupon books each in my home-delivery editions of The Monroe Evening News and Detroit Free Press.
