Prime Time Money is hosting the June 9 edition of Carnival of Personal Finance. Here are some of the blog posts you’ll find this week among video clips of summer music tunes:

Your Finish Rich Plan presents The overdraft fees ripoff: “Overdraft fees as they are currently applied are a very bad financial proposition (at least for the consumers) and something definitely needs to be done.” Even if the overdraft formulas are reworked, the best approach is to prevent that situation to begin with. I’m sure you can think of better places to spend that $35 or whatever bank fee.

Keeping Feet (she’s from central Indiana) presents Subscription math: “To make Netflix worth it, we’d need to get 6 or more movies a month.” Sometimes, a la carte really is the best option.

Not Made of Money presents Can a freezer lower the cost of your groceries? “Stocking up your frozen pantry can add up to real savings in your grocery expenses. And with an enormous bounty of food at your fingertips, you can also make fewer trips to the grocery store.” If you get a freezer for food storage, figure out ahead of time what you will do to save that investment in case of a power loss. My home had no power this week for almost 48 hours, which was enough to ruin $50 to $60 worth of groceries from the refrigerator / freezer. (Click back for those stories.) On the other hand, all of our canned and dry good surplus stayed intact.

Monroe on a Budget presents New species: middle class families on tight budgets: “These are families who had good-paying / steady jobs until fairly recently, which is why they have a computer, a house and a car.” Middle-class families might be able to keep their own heads above water without formal charity or public assistance if they knew what else they could do during tight finances.
