Good deeds or bad deeds?

A reader alerts us to a solicitation he got from a company offering to supply him with a certified copy of his property deed.

His question was, is this legit?

The answer: Only if you want to pay a higher price for a copy of your deed than you could get on your own.

Various companies mail official-looking letters touting the importance of having a certified copy of your property deed. They’ll get yours–for a price. Most people already have a copy of their deed from when they closed on their home, but even if you need another, why pay top dollar?

Consumer Reports found that some of these soliciting firms want $80 or $90 for a copy of a deed, when most government offices across the country charge just a few bucks.
In Monroe County, for example, the register of deeds office charges $1 per page for copies of real estate records and $1 for certification of such copies.
