Goodyear offering to exchange some tires

Goodyear is offering to replace certain Kelley tires and other brands that it makes because of a tread separation problem.

The company says the tires aren’t defective and this isn’t a recall, but a precautionary offer.

Sweetwater Farms recalls more cheese

Sweetwater Farms is recalling two more varieties of its cheese due to possible bacterial contamination.

Some Lexus models have fuel pipe problem

Toyota is recalling 264,000 vehicles over faulty fuel pipes, including 49,000 flagship Lexus cars.Included in the recall are Lexus models produced in Japan in 2005 and sold overseas, and Lexus, Mark X, and Crown models sold in Japan. Faulty fuel pipe design on the recalled models could cause cracks and corrosion and lead to a fuel leak.

In the United States, 26,274 Lexus GS300, 5,429 Lexus IS250, and 2,640 Lexus IS350 vehicles are being recalled. The recalled models were exported from Japan, she said, adding that the same models were also being recalled in Canada, England, and Germany.

There have been 39 cases of trouble within Japan but no reports of injuries. Owners of the affected cars will be notified of the recall by mail.

Simpler prescription labels recommended

A physician’s group has found that many people don’t understand how often they are supposed to take their prescription drugs. There’s a move afoot to make prescription drug labels easier to interpret.

Michigan gets F for school nutrition

A food safety advocacy group issued its annual report card on school policies regarding the sale of non-nutritional foods sold through vending machines or other methods on school grounds.

Michigan, along with more than 20 other states, got an F for not having more proactive policies to control the availability of sweet, salty or fattening snacks and sodas.

The state also got an F last year.

Feds crack down on Adteractive spam

The Federal Trade Commission is going after Adteractive for sending out millions of misleading e-mails that enticed the recipients with promises of free merchandise, but instead induced them to participate in various promotional offers that involved purchases or other commitments.

ID theft remains big problem

The Federal Trade Commission reports that 8.3 million people or about 3.7 percent of all American adults were victims of identity theft in 2005.

The amount of loss per person ranged from below $500 to well over $6,000 and it took about four hours for the ID victims to straighten out the mess. Perhaps the most shocking statistic in the FTC report: About 56 percent of all victims didn’t know how their personal information was stolen.

Lazy Lounger chairs tend to collapse

Lazy Lounger chairs sold through Dick’s Sporting Goods stores are being recalled because they can collapse and injure consumers. More than a dozen injuries have occurred from collapsing chairs.

Lead in Christmas ornaments

About 36,000 horse and stirrup-themed Christmas ornaments sold through various retailers, including JCPenney’s Web site and catalog stores, are being recalled because they are decorated with lead-laden paint.

Don’t take myfortic if pregnant

Women who are pregnant or soon-to-be-pregnant should avoid taking myfortic, a prescription drug meant to suppress immune system response in patients who have had kidney transplants.

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. said it has found positive evidence of fetal risk involved in use of the drug. That’s a change from its previous status as a drug that showed no confirmed evidence of fetal risk.

Bank income fell sharply

Here’s the latest from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp:

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation-insured commercial banks and savings institutions reported net income of $28.7 billion for the third quarter of 2007, a decline of $9.4 billion (24.7 percent) from the third quarter of 2006. A steep increase in provisions for loan losses, as well as a decline in noninterest income, were chiefly responsible for the year-over-year earnings decline. The last time that banks earned less than $30 billion in a quarter was in the first quarter of 2003.
