ID theft remains big problem

The Federal Trade Commission reports that 8.3 million people or about 3.7 percent of all American adults were victims of identity theft in 2005.

The amount of loss per person ranged from below $500 to well over $6,000 and it took about four hours for the ID victims to straighten out the mess. Perhaps the most shocking statistic in the FTC report: About 56 percent of all victims didn’t know how their personal information was stolen.
