FBI warns about work-at-home scams
Wednesday, February 4th, 2009The FBI is warning that there’s an increase in work-at-home scams, both via regular mail and e-mail.
Especially during an economic downturn when consumers are looking for extra cash, it’s easy to be duped by mystery shopper and reshipping scams that can end up costing the victims bucks and get them into legal trouble.
SunTrust charitable sweepstakes a scam
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009Area residents report receiving letters claiming they have won a charitable sweepstakes. Enclosed is a check from SunTrust Bank of Atlanta in the amount of $4,973.59. The recipient is instructed to cash the check and wire $3,700 of the proceeds to an address in Canada to pay underwriter charges and taxes on the prize. The mailed materials also bear the name of Sunflower Financial Institution of Beloit, Kan.
The letter is postmarked from Mississauga, Ontario.
Just toss it in the trash.
Though the check might look legitimate, it’s counterfeit. Your bank might cash it, but when they find out it’s bogus, you’ll be on the hook for the money.
