Dangerous toys await shoppers

In the mad scramble for Christmas gifts, consumers might snap up some toys that are decidedly unhealthy for their kids. The Public Interest Research Group has released its 24th annual Trouble in Toyland report, documenting some of the products on the market that can choke your kid, cause hearing loss or expose him to lead. Scroll down to the bottom of the report to see descriptions and photos of some of the toy hazards.
An Elmo lunch box, for example, has high levels of a plastics additive that is believed to have health effects. A toy triceratops dinosaur emits a sound that exceeds federal safety levels, and a dinosaur cloth book has lead content that’s downright dangerous.
PIRG also has a new interactive tool accessible by smart phone or computer that allows consumers to check on the safety of toys or report a problem product.
