New labels will shed light on light bulbs

Starting in mid-2011, light bulbs will have new labels that provide information about brightness, not just energy usage. A bulb’s output in “lumens” will be displayed on the label, partly because some bulbs of certain wattage don’t produce the same brightness as other bulbs — such as the difference between a traditional incandescent bulb and a compact fluorescent bulb.
