Buckle up!

Cedar Point officially opened for the summer this past weekend.  Their big unveiling of their 17th roller coaster – Maverick – has yet to make its debut however. Its opening has been delayed until early June to make modifications to the coaster’s steel track.

The new coaster is a 4,450 foot long course. The first hill is 105-feet tall and takes you down a 95-degree angle that speeds up to 57 mph to within five feet from the ground – yikes! From there, you go through many twists and turns in two minutes, 30 seconds. It reaches speeds of 70 mph throughout the ride.

I don’t know about you, but just writing about this ride makes me nervous. To my family and friends, I am the biggest wuss there is when it comes to coasters. I wish I wasn’t, but I am. There are plenty of stories they could tell when I was little…my poor sister took the brunt of my coaster tantrums as they forced me aboard.  Yes, I rode my share but I didn’t like it. I never felt comfortable that a lone seatbelt would keep me secure on those rides. Talk about terrorizing – I think I blocked out half of my childhood memories of Cedar Point!

What about you? Are you a coaster junkie or a wuss like me? Please feel free to share any stories you may have from riding roller coasters. And let me know when you ride the Maverick this summer. I’m sure fellow bloggers would enjoy your opinion of the new ride.

My whole family are coaster fanatics…and I’m definitely a chicken. My mom used to bribe me to go on them when I was little!! However, a year ago my best friend made me ride the Raptor..so now I will ride that one, but not many others. I was thinking about trying the Maverick but I don’t know. I ride the Raptor, Iron Dragon, Gemini, and Blue Streak. That’s pretty much it. Lol. Wow…At least I’m not the only wuss around here!! Haha

Wuss here! Ok, so I’m a wuss when it comes to riding upside down. I tried the Corscrew once, back in 1988, and will never do that again. I do like Iron Dragon, Gemini, Blue Streak, you know, the more “standard-issue”. But I like keeping my lunch inside my gullet, thank-you-very-much! ;-)

I can’t believe you guys will ride the Blue Streak! I love coasters but I also don’t want to die, I haven’t ridden the Blue Streak since about 1999. That is the most rickety, seatbelt lacking coaster I’ve ever ridden! LOL I love coasters, I’m a nervous Nelly the entire time I’m in like and talk myself out of riding about 3 times per 30 minutes but by the time I get on the platform I’m ready. :)

One of my favorite Cedar Point memories happened the year the Millennium Force opened, a group of friends went and we were all pretty much (for the most part) grown up, probably 20 or so (I can’t remember what year it opened). I remember standing in line and everyone was totally cool, just standing in line waiting to ride. I think we were even making fun of the people getting off the ride cause they were all cheering and hooting and hollering. We were thinking I’m sure the ride is fun, but come on….cheering? But once we rode that ride and the ride came to end and we were waiting to get out of the seats we were all screaming and cheering! Once we all got off of it we were like 10 year olds. All of our eyes were big and we were all talking to each other even thought none of us were listening to the other and we couldn’t stop high-fiving each other. That ride is sooo much fun, it really brings the kid out in you.

I love coasters! The Blue Streak remains my fave, even though I’ve tried pretty much everything else. The one thing I would never go on was the Demon Drop. Too many stories about tongue swallowing and heart attacks - I know they’re not true, but still. Something’s got to be left to the imagination, right?
I haven’t been to Cedar Point in years though. I can’t wait for this year. Now that I know it’s open, maybe I’ll go next week.
