The American Film Institute (AFI) will be giving its opinion of the top 100 greatest movies of all time during a TV special on Wednesday.
Morgan Freeman will host AFI’s 100 years…100 movies – 10th Anniversary Edition at 8 p.m. Wednesday on CBS. Special appearances include Harrison Ford, Martin Sheen, Martin Scorsese, Halle Berry, and many more.
My guess is that the number one movie will either be The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Shawshank Redemption, or Casablanca.
It’s hard to pick THE best movie of all-time, but some of my favorites are The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Wizard of Oz, The Departed, Star Wars, Taxi Driver, Halloween …okay, I guess I could go on forever here. There’s too many to mention, I just can’t pick one!
What are your favorites? What do you think will be number one?
On Thursday, I’ll give you a rundown on what they picked in case you miss it.

The AFI has had a top 100 list for years. #1 has been Citizen Kane as long as I’ve been following. Will be interesting to see the list if it’s being redone.
Agree Shawshank Redemption was a great movie! Goes to show what a wonderful writer Stephen King is. He’s known for his horror, but movies like this, Stand By Me, and Green Mile show he has no borders.
Definitely Shawshank Redemption! And it was filmed only about two hours from here. It’s almost local.
Comedies rarely make the top of these kinds of lists. I assume there’s some requirement regarding “literature” … I’d love to see Cary Grant’s “Arsenic & Old Lace” or some musical such as “Singin’ In The Rain” up there, but such a thing will never happen.
I think there is a difference between the best of all time and your personal favorites. Like Luna Pier Chief mentioned, just because you’re personal favorite is a comedy doesn’t mean you think it’s the best movie of all time. Greatness in movies is measured by more than just how much you like it. You have to take into account the impact it has on the world at the time, its lasting impact, and usually the depth of the subject/dialog. I have a personal top 5 (I think everyone should) and it’s constantly changing. Here’s where it stands as of today: 5 – Return of the King, 4: Mall Rats, 3: Garden State, 2: Lion King, 1: The Green Mile.
I’m pretty much all over the board as far as genera except I rarely think romantic comedies are that great. I mostly like Drama, Science Fiction/Fantasy and Comedies. Some of my other favorites that fall in to line somewhere after #5 are Dirty Dancing, Crash, Life is Beautiful, Grease, Napoleon Dynamite, Harry Potter and the Sources Stone, Little Miss Sunshine, Gone with the wind, Cool hand Luke, Young Frankenstein, Life as a house, Pretty Woman, Star Wars, Braveheart, Say Anything, 300, Spiderman, Matrix and the rest of the Lord of the Rings movies.
BTW, I’ve seen Citizen Kane and I didn’t really care for it all that much!
I’m calling it- #1 Citizen Kane (which I hate), #2 Casablanca and #3 The Godfather
