DVD releases set for Oscar films

Three Oscar-nominated films will be going to DVDs soon.

Here’s the short list:

–”Juno” will be available on April 15. It’s up for best picture, director, actress and original screenplay.

–”Lars and the Real Girl” arrives April 15. It’s nominated for best original screenplay.

–”The Savages” goes to DVD on April 22. It’s up for best actress and original screenplay.

‘Dancing’ lineup revealed

Dancing with the Stars revealed its new lineup of stars last night. The new season begins March 17.

“Jumper” leaps to No. 1 at box office

“Jumper” starring Hayden Christensen easily landed on top of the box office list over the weekend.

It snagged $27.2 million over the weekend, and a total of $33.9 million since its Thursday debut. The film is about a man who can teleport himself to any spot in the world.

It has a local connection. The Siberia scene was actually filmed in Newport. It also includes scenes from Ann Arbor.

Here’s the top 10 box office numbers:

Latest film news

–The Coen brothers will follow up “No Country for Old Men” by taking on the Michael Chabon novel “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union.”

Star Trek has been pushed back to 2009. It is being moved from a Dec. 25 release date to May 8, 2009. Paramount believes it has more potential as a summer blockbuster.

Wes Craven will write and direct “25/8″ for Rogue Pictures. The film is about a serial killer who turns up 15 years after his purported death, to kill the seven children born on that fateful night. This is Craven’s first film that he’s both written and directed since “A New Nightmare” in 1994.

Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, and Gael Garcia Bernal will star in a thriller called “The Limits of Control.” The movie is about a mysterious loner who attempts to complete a criminal job. The film begins shooting this month.

–”Juno” star Ellen Page will star in “Drag Me To Hell,” a horror film to be directed by Sam Raimi. The plot is described as a morality tale about the unwitting recipient of a supernatural curse. Shooting begins March 17 in Los Angeles.

–Marisa Tomei will play a stripper in “The Wrestler” with Mickey Rourke.

–Renee Zellweger will star in “My One and Only,” set in 1950 about a childhood adventure George Hamilton had. The comedy is based on a true story that Hamilton told Merv Griffin about his early life on the road with  his mom and brother.

–Hank Azaria will join Ben Stiller and Amy Adams in “Night at the Museum 2: Escape from the Smithsonian.”

–Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) is joining Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac in “Soul Men.” The movie is about two estranged singers who reunite for a tribute concert after the death of a third member.

The following list are scheduling changes for upcoming films:

-Ben Stiller’s comedy “Tropic Thunder” is moving from July 11 to Aug. 15.

-Eddie Murphy’s “Nowhereland” moves from Sept. 26, 2008 to June 12, 2009.

-Renee Zellweger’s horror flick “Case 39″ is moving from Aug. 22, 2008 to April 10, 2009.

-Brad Pitt’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” moves from Nov. 26, 2008 to Dec. 19, 2008.   

“Guitar Hero: Aerosmith” coming in June

The first one-band edition of the “Guitar Hero” video game will feature Aerosmith.

“Guitar Hero: Aerosmith” will be released in June for Playstation 2 and 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.

It will cost about $50 and will track the history of the band, from their high school years up to the 2001 Super Bowl halftime show.

NBC sets return dates

More TV news…this time, NBC announced its spring lineup. It picked up “Chuck,” “Life” and “Heroes” for the 2008-09 season.

The following is a list when NEW episodes return:

-My Name is Earl — returns April 3 with a 1-hour episode

-30 Rock, The Office, Scrubs and ER will return April 10

-Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will be back April 15

-Law & Order comes back April 23  

Weekly Buzz

Happy Valentine’s Day! As always on Thursday, here is the latest edition of the Weekly Buzz.

LOCAL EVENTS

–The annual Valentine’s Day dinner will be held at three local McDonald’s Restaurants from 5-8 p.m. today. It’s a low cost, wait-free, and kid-friendly romantic dinner. Participating restaurants are located at 1533 N. Telegraph Rd., Monroe; 1180 N. Dixie Hwy., Frenchtown Township, and 20815 Gibraltar Rd., Brownstown Township.

–Ken Baumann will present the Civil War Series at 7 p.m. tonight at Ellis Reference & Information Center, 3700 S. Custer Rd.

–THANKS Inc. will hold its 8th annual Winterfest and Snowball Tournament Friday through Sunday at Ida Volunteer Firefighters Park, 3016 Lewis Ave., Ida. Check out this past Monday’s Evening News for all the details and complete schedule of events.

–”Dr. DoLittle,” a children’s musical, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Monroe County Community College, 1555 S. Raisinville Rd. Cost is $5.

–Texas Hold’Em Tournament will be held Saturday at Monroe Post 1138, VFW hall, 400 Jones Ave.

–Empower Yourself Women’s Expo 2008 will be from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Grafton Hall, 12601 Grafton Rd., Carleton. Exhibits from popular home party vendors, along with other services and products, will be shown. Cost is $5. For details, call 654-9469.

REGIONAL EVENTS

–”Guitar Fest 2008″ will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Toledo School for the Arts, 333 14th St., Toledo. Cost of $25 includes breakfast and T-shirt. It’s a day-long celebration of all things guitar, featuring guests artists, performances, clinics, equipment vendors, competitions, and prizes. To register, call (419) 246-8732, ext. 226.

–The 38th annual Model Train Show will be held Saturday and Sunday at Saline Middle School, 7190 N. Maple Rd., Saline. Cost is $6 for adults.

–The 5th annual MS JAM will be held Saturday at the Toledo Erie Street Market. Six bands, acoustic music, silent auction, raffles and more. For all ages.

–The 20th annual “Frost Bite Open” Winter Golf Tournament will be held Sunday on Budd lake in Harrison. For details, visit www.harrisonchamber.com.

–”Joyce Davis - Puppeteer” will perform “Who’s in Rabbit’s House?” on Saturday and Sunday at the Toledo Zoo. Times are 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on both days.

TELEVISION

–Comedy Central is roasting country music star Willie Nelson in honor of his 75th birthday. It will be taped on April 17, and air in early June.

–Jack Black will host Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards on March 29.

–ABC plans on running enhanced repeats of Lost throughout the season. Starting tonight, reruns of the prior week’s episode (8 p.m. Thursdays) will include on-screen pop-up graphics that explain references and characters.

–CW and WWE have parted ways. The wrestling show and network have decided to split, leaving “Smackdown” looking for a new home. No immediate word on where the wrestling show will land.

–Showtime has set a June premiere date for its comedy series “Weeds.” It will be June 16.

 –Benjamin Bratt will star in an A&E original drama series called “The Cleaner.” Bratt stars as William “The Cleaner” Banks, who strikes a deal with God after hitting rock bottom from his addictions. In exchange for a second chance, he vows to kick his problems and dedicates his life to helping others.

–Saturday Night Live will be back Feb. 23. Tina Fey will host.

–24 won’t be back until January, 2009. Now more bad news: Co-creator/executive producer Joel Surnow has left the show. He’s focusing on new projects.

–The Breeders announced their first tour in a long time. It coincides with the release of the band’s fourth album, “Mountain Battles,” that comes out April 8. They will be making a stop in Detroit — on June 1 at the Magic Stick.

–Feist will be makig a stop in Detroit during her latest tour. She will perform at The Fillmore on April 10.

–Kenny Chesney’s Poets & Pirates Tour will be coming to Ford Field on Aug. 2. Guests include Keith Urban, LeAnn Rimes, Gary Allan and Luke Bryan.

–Tim McGraw will perform at DTE Energy Music Theater on May 22.

–Joe Louis Arena has some good concerts coming up. The Foo Fighters will perform on Feb. 24, Def Leppard (with REO Speedwagon and Styx) will play April 19, and Rush — Snakes & Arrows World Tour will perform on June 10.

–Comedian Chris Rock has two dates lined up at the Fox Theater. He will perform Feb. 29 and March 1.

–Mariah Carey’s new album, “E=MC2,” will be in stores on April 15.

The teaser trailer for “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” debuted this morning.

The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Harrison Ford. It arrives in theaters May 22.

It seems like networks are announcing its new schedule by the hour!

NBC just announced that Saturday Night Live will return Feb. 23 with Tina Fey as the host. Ellen Page (”Juno” star) will host on March 1. It’s been reported that SNL will produce new shows for four straight weeks.

CBS just released when it will air the first NEW episodes of your favorite shows. The following list also includes how many new shows remain this season, in parentheses.

UPDATED: When TV shows return

The writer’s strike is officially OVER! Yeahhh!

TV shows are already in high gear with producing new shows to salvage the rest of this season. There will be new episodes of your favorite shows in April and May. The strike, however, does have some casualties. One of my favorite shows, 24, will not return until January, 2009. Ugghh!
