‘Up’ defeats ‘Hangover’ at box office

There was so much hype about the debuts of “The Hangover” and “Land of the Lost,” everyone forgot about the reigning champ.

“Up,” last week’s No. 1 movie, beat ‘Hangover’ by less than $1 million. It earned $44.2 million, while ‘Hangover’ tookin $43.3 million.

Will ferrell’s action comedy “Land of the Last” settled for a distant third with $19.5 million – ouch!

Latest Pop Culture News

-The Sci Fi Channel is airing a “Land of the Lost” marathon today.

-A&E canceled “The Beast,” starring Patrick Swayze.

-Winona Ryder and Christian Slater are planning a sequel to the 1988 cult film “Heathers.” The movie helped both actors launch their careers. Details of the new film have not been released.

-Prison Break’s Robert Knepper will be the new lead villain on “Heroes” next season.

-Whitney Houston’s new album will be released on Sept. 1.

-Some details of “The Beatles: Rock Band” video game have been revealed. Some of the 45 songs will be “I Saw Her Standing There,” “I Am the Walrus,” and “Day Tripper.” Also, the entire ”Abbey Road” album will be available for purchase and downloads as will other tracks from the band’s catalog, after the game’s release on Sept. 9.

-Where’s Waldo? Apparently, he’ll be found on the big screen. A “Where’s Waldo?” live-action family movie is in the works.

-Chevy Chase will star, with John Cusack and Rob Corddry, in a comedy called “Hot Tub Time Machine.” It follows a bunch of unsatisfied guys who get thrown back to their younger days in 1987 via their Jacuzzi.

-Barbra Streisand is writing a book, not a memoir, called “A Passion for Design” about her Malibu dream house. The illustrated book will be released in fall, 2010.

-ABC is bringing back “Better Off Ted” for six episodes this summer. They will air at 9 p.m. Tuesdays beginning June 23.

-Zac Efron will be a guest star on an episode of “Entourage.” The Season Six premiere will be at 10:30 p.m. July 12 on HBO. Other celebrity guests appearing as themselves this season include Tom Brady, LeBron James and Lil Wayne.

-A remake of “Total Recall” is in the works (why mess with a good thing?). Anyway, Columbia secured the remake rights to do the remake of the 1990 Sci-Fi flick that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.

-NBC will debut the “Jay Leno Show” at 10 p.m. Sept. 14, and will air Monday through Friday. To make room, several shows had to change their usual time slots. For example, Law & Order (normally 10 p.m. Wednesdays) will move to 8 p.m. Fridays, and Law & Order: SVU will move to 9 p.m. Wednesdays.

“Up” tops box office

Pixar continues to blow the competition out of the water.

This time, it was “Up” that debuted at $68.2 million for the weekend. In comparison, it took last weekend’s winner, “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” four days to gross $70 million.

‘Night at the Museum’ was runner-up this weekend with $25.5 million, bringing its total earnings to $105.2 million in two weeks.

The horror flick “Drag Me  To Hell” opened in third place with $16.6 million.

Next weekend will pit Will Ferrell’s action comedy ”Land of the Lost” against the comedy “The Hangover.”
