‘Bruno’ lands at No. 1

Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno” landed at the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office with $30.4 million.

It may not hold the same staying pwer as “Borat,” however, which made $100 million. Most of Bruno’s earnings came on Friday — $14.4 million — then tumbled with just $8.8 million on Saturday and about $7.2 million on Sunday.

“Bruno” is about a gay Austrian searching to achieve celebrity status. It finished ahead of “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” which earned $28.5 million.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” finished third with $24.2 million, raising its domestic total to $339.2 million. It has now passed the $319 million total of 2007’s ‘Transformers.’

The only other new wide release, “I Love You, Beth Cooper,” opened with only $5 million, finishing at No. 7. It stars Hayden Panettiere.
