Wild Chicago: Illinois Beach State Park in the News

As a former resident of the Chicagoland area, I can say with great authority that the Second City is NOT an outdoors paradise.  Detroit and Cleveland have much better hiking and public lands than the Chicago area.  That said, a few spots are worth taking a look at.  One of these is the Illinois Beach State Park on Lake Michigan to the north of Chicago.  The Chicago Tribune has a story on this park:

But I’m not crying. My kids and I still got our beach vacation—or should I say STAYcation—in Zion.

Yes, Zion in Lake County. Home to the Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center, which boasts it’s the only hotel in the state situated right on the shore of Lake Michigan.

But the promise of lake view rooms for $129 a night, nature hikes, a huge swimming pool and, most of all, a private beach made for a powerful lure. So I booked a Tuesday night room for my family.
