Dune Developer Aubrey McClendon Backs Pickens Pro-Gas Plan
I like to relax on Sunday morning by reading the news on my computer, updating my blog and watching the news chat programs on network TV. My relaxation was broken for a moment when Aubrey McClendon suddenly popped up on the TV.
Aubrey McClendon, for those who don’t know, is an extremely wealthy land developer and businessman from Oklahoma. He is extremely controversial for several reasons. McClendon raised the ire of Seattle residents by purchasing the Seattle Supersonics basketball team and announcing a move to Oklahoma City.
Closer to home, McClendon recently purchased 400 acres at the mouth of the Kalamazoo River in Saugatuck. Local leaders had been close to purchasing the land for a park before McClendon outbid the group. He intends to build luxury homes on the location.
The TV spot that grabbed my attention was an advertising campaign from cngnow. The group supports conversion of out nation’s traditional gasoline stations and cars to natural gas fuel. The plan has gotten a big push recently through advertising funded by T. Boone Pickens. McClendon, of course, is CEO of Chesapeake Energy, the country’s largest producer of natural gas.
Personally, I think that conversion to natural gas is a good idea. It would decrease our dependence on foreign oil. However, McClendon has not exactly proven himself a friend of the environment. And his business tactics are quite definitely hardball. He is a man to be watched…and closely.
