The Legend of Tims Lake: Jackson CitPat
The Jackson Citizen Patriot retells an old Native American legend about Grass Lake Township’s Tims Lake in a recent edition. Excerpt and link:
One spring morning, Fah-nee-nah took a canoe onto the lake. She observed a large stag swimming across the water. The deer spotted the canoe and made a quick return to shore, only to be shot by an arrow. A young Chippewa warrior named Nan-vel-loh, or Panther Foot, claimed his kill and met the young maiden.
During the summer, the two encountered each other again and fell in love. They agreed to meet monthly under the full moon, using an owl call as a summon.
Sau-gan-gee was aware of the frequent visitor and told his daughter that the Chippewas were the enemy. The warning went unheeded.
