Lawyers Build Kayak in Living Room: Feb. Detroit River Launch Planned

Two suburban Detroit lawyers are building a wooden kayak in one of their living rooms.  Since November, I’ve been receiving Google alerts about the construction phases.  The men plan to launch their kayak on the Detroit River in February.  Read the Oakland County Legal News story about the pair at the link below:

Two attorneys with the Federal Defender’s Office, Richard Helfrick and Andrew Wise, started building a kayak in Helfrick’s living room at his home in Huntington Woods on Saturday, Nov. 29.

The endeavor was born out of a shared interest in kayaking.

“I’ve been a kayaker for awhile and had been admiring wooden kayaks and wanted to get one for myself,” Wise said.

After a trip with friends, Helfrick also discovered an interest in kayaking.

So these two colleagues decided to venture into building a kayak - something that is entirely new to both of them.

“We’re sort of building this kayak for Rick first and then I’m hoping to build one for myself afterwards,” Wise said. “And Rick - being the single guy - has an empty heated living room which is an excellent place to build a kayak in the winter.”
