St. Clair River New Year’s Float Banned
Residents of Port Huron have an annual New Year’s Day tradition of donning wet suits and floating the St. Clair River. This year, the U.S. Coast Guard has advised residents not to take part in the tradition. Detroit News excerpt and link:
The guard says the traditional float down the river, starting near the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, is dangerous. The river’s temperature was in the mid-30s on Tuesday.
The Guard will set up a “safety zone” around noon on Thursday to prevent swimmers from entering the water.
But past participants tell the Times Herald of Port Huron that most swimmers are experienced divers who know what they’re doing. One said he still plans to swim anyway.
