Upstream Update: Volunteers Clean the Upper Maumee River in IN

It might seem difficult to believe, but the upper stretches of the Maumee River flow through Fort Wayne, IN.  And an energetic volunteer named Abigail Frost coordinates two river cleanups on the river in that city.  I have had the pleasure of trading emails with Abigail as a result of writing this blog.  Her work is important because the Maumee ultimately flows into Maumee Bay and Lake Erie.

Frost and the cleanup efforts are detailed in the latest edition of Fort Wayne’s entertainment magazine Whatzup.  Here’s the link:

Thank you so much!! I love you advertising for me! It is so important that we bring attention back to our rivers!

FYI- THIS is the headwaters of the Maumee River, this area is of utmost importance because up to 80% of a streams water quality is inherited at the headwaters…right HERE! So sorry Lake Erie!

This area, the Maumee, is the one running off the page on the east (right), this area has been found to have some of the highest Mercury content in Indiana. I am going to put together a Upper Maumee Watershed Plan for Indiana, but research and projects will be heavily concentrated on this 6 mile stretch of the Maumee!
Happy Earth Day! Hope you can make it

    - we sit right here (in this pic) on 3 major watersheds!
