Does Roundup Cause Lake Erie Algae Blooms? OSU Study

Published by Mike Ingels at 7:23 pm under Hiking: Monroe, Hiking: Regional, News Digest

An Ohio State University study raises the possibility that the herbicide Roundup may be a major cause of the recently resurgent Lake Erie Algae blooms.  Here’s a link to the study:

I finally got around to reading the write up in the Ohio Sea Grant publication. It doesn’t present any of the original research, but indicates that the glysophate (the main ingredient in Roundup) which may be contributing to the algal blooms is the result of Roundup being applied by farmers to Roundup Ready crops. These genetically modified glysophate-resistant crops (mostly corn and soybeans) are already resulting in Roundup resistant weeds: http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2009a/090414JohnsonSurvey.html
