DNR/DEQ Merger Moves to State Senate

During the governorship of John Engler, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources was divided in two.  One section, the DEQ, was given the responsibility for water quality monitoring and environmental permitting.  The DNR kept responsibilities like state parks and hunting permits/rules.

The result of this merger was a reduction in the power of both agencies.

In recent weeks, there has been talk about merging these two units.  The idea is that it might save money.  But that is debateable.  The Great Lakes Echo has the story:
