Hint: it’s an “open book” quiz

Friday, August 1st, 2008

So, are you having fun with the presidential quiz at The Monroe Evening News’ booth in the Monroe Bank & Trust Expo building?

28 correct entries were submitted today (Friday). One of them wins $50.

I’m surprised there weren’t more correct entries submitted from the big bag that got delivered to my desk a few minutes ago. Why?

Well, you see, this is an “open book” quiz. Take a look at those headlines on the wall at our booth …

Friday’s fair ride promotion

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Unlimited ride passes will be available at The Monroe County Fair today. The passes cost $20 each. The midway opens at noon.

A tip: pay attention to the crowds when you get at the fair and do some math. Friday and Saturday crowds are typically very busy. How many rides do you think you’ll get with that wristband when you also plan to eat, visit with friends and perhaps see a show?

Maybe you’re better off getting a strip of 22 tickets for $25, and sharing that cost and those tickets with someone? Each ticket costs $1.25 a la carte and the rides cost two to five tickets each.

Now about the cost of those fair rides

Friday, August 1st, 2008

I’ve been posting the “deals of the day” fair specials in this blog.

The question I’m sure many of you parents have is “what do the fair rides cost without the specials?”

I didn’t get that information until yesterday, when I was on the fairgrounds.

Yes, you can buy tickets a la carte. The cost is $1.25 per ticket. The rides each take two to five tickets.

Another deal that might work well for a family is a sheet of 22 tickets for $25.

So for example: my husband and I have been hosting one of the Hofu, Japan, sister city students this past week. We took her to the fair Thursday night. Our goal for the night was to eat some fair food and check out the sights. The only ride our student was interested in was the scary fun house, and well, I wanted to go on it too.

We looked at the sign on the ride that said the admission was three tickets. We went to the booth, bought six tickets for $7.50, and went on our ride.

Letters to the editor about the fair

Friday, August 1st, 2008

There are two letters to the editor about the Monroe County Fair in Thursday’s print and e-editions of The Monroe Evening News.

  • Keith J. Cronenwett, vice president of the Monroe County Fair Association, wrote about the free things one can do or see at the fair once they get into the fairgrounds.
  • Bill Brittain of Monroe wrote about how pleased he was with the New Odyssey band’s musical talents, and thanked the fair board for booking the band.

Concert tickets available

Monday, July 28th, 2008

There are still plenty of bleacher seats available plus a few seats on the grandstand track for tonight’s Blake Shelton-Miranda Lambert concert at 8 p.m. at the fair. The tickets are $43 for seats on the track and $33 and $23 for spots in the bleachers. All tickets are reserved and can be purchased at the fair. Visitors are reminded they will have to also pay the $5 adult admission fee just to get into the grounds.

Quiet Sunday

Monday, July 28th, 2008

With no rides going on Sunday, it seemed quietier than normal. But nice. I liked it. I think that was the first time I was there since they opened on Sunday. The weather was excellent. Sunny and warm but not blazing like usual. At the Farm Bureau building they offered a $2 pork burger, which I thought was excellent, being a pork guy. For an extra $1 they add chips and slaw. Great stuff.
