Wrong and Right Humility
February 6th, 2008 Posted in Spirituality
I was just reading a statement by Thomas R. Kelly in his classic book A Testament of Devotion. “Humility does not rest, in final count, upon bafflement and discouragement and self-disgust at our shabby lives, a brow-beaten, dog-slinking attitude. It rests upon the disclosure of the consummate wonder of God, upon finding that only God counts, that all our own self-originated intentions are works of straw.” (p. 57)
How true! Wrong humility is a fixation on our own lack. Right humility is a fixation upon God’s abundance! Humility is not being unimpressed with self but not really even thinking all that much about self because we are so wonderfully distracted by how awesome God is! Wrong humility is self-centered. Right humility is God-centered!
