Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday (click on words for an explanation of “Maundy”) is this coming Thursday, the day we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, or Communion, in preparation for Good Friday and Easter. As I shared with our congregation on Palm Sunday, you can’t fully appreciate Easter unless you’ve experienced Maundy Thursday.
I find it pure genius on Jesus’ part (no surprise here) that He initiated such a simple meal for friends of His to enjoy together in order for them to be able to reminisce about what He would do the next day at Golgotha. Such a simple meal! It’s been celebrated in not only cathedrals and churches but in homes, prisons, fox holes, hospitals and who knows where else. “Do this in rememberance of me,” He said. And so we do, and remember!
My accompanying picture to this post is of a single cube of bread and a small cup of juice. A bite of bread and a single drink from a cup is all it should take to prompt the reminder of the fact that we can live for Him because He died for us.

My niece’s husband disappeared last Friday, leaving behind a suicide note. Over the weekend there was no news, and the family had resigned themselves that David was dead and that they might never find his body. On Sunday my sister called me in joy, relief, and a touch of astonishment, saying, “They’ve found David—and he’s alive!” Along with relief and gratitude about this situation, I realized that this must be what the disciples felt after the three days following Christ’s crucifixion: the same incredulous joy that ”He’s alive!” and the knowledge that though difficulties lie ahead, there’s hope as long as “He’s alive!” Happy Easter!

Relief, gratitude, incredulous joy — they all describe the true experience of Easter, don’t they? Yes, He is risen in deed!
Thanks for writing,
