If you ask the average American what the Humane Society of the United States is all about, the majority will say it’s a group that is a pet shelter “umbrella” group. The commercials the group has on TV ask for $19 a month to support their mission. Based on the pictures they show, which is usually dogs and cats, one would think that’s where your money is going. In fact, very little of their $100 million annual budget goes to shelters. Less than one percent, only .5% goes to pet shelters.
So where is their money going? It’s used to lobby against family farms. The HSUS is focused on animal rights, not helping the animals they show you on the commercials. They do not operate a single shelter. Since 1998, more than $16 million has been dedicated to an executive pension plan. Is that where people who donate to them thought their money would go?
To quote the then vice president of the HSUS in 2006, their goal is to “get rid of the entire (animal agriculture) industry” and “we don’t want any of these animals to be raised and killed.”
Bottom line: know where your money is going before you donate to any group. HSUS is a threat to family farms like ours. HSUS is NOT your local pet shelter.
