Superbad

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

I went and saw Superbad this weekend.  It was hilarious!  Really.  There was some CLASSIC stuff in this film.  And, I know this is probably my worst written review yet, but that’s all I can say about this movie!  It was just SO damn funny!  See it.  You’ll laugh.  LOTS!

Chuck and Larry

Monday, August 20th, 2007

I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry is about two firefighters who stage a gay marriage to get pension transferred to Larry’s kids in the event of his death. The plan comes crashing down when the city of New York does an investigation.

Ok, so, this movie was funny. And had an original storyline, and had some good messages… but nothing about it ever made me say “This is a great film.”

It was just average. Good, but nothing spectacular.

Cashback

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Cashback is a film about an art student who has insomnia and uses that extra time to get a job on the midnight staff at a grocery store.  While there, he discovers the ability to stop time.

This film is a mouthful to classify.  It’s a British Independant sci-fi romantic comedy.

What this film is, is easy to classify.  BRILLIANT!

The acting is fantastic.  The concept is superb.  The special effects are beautiful and the the cinematography is clever.  You will laugh your ass off, be interested by the main character’s philosophies, feel giddy from the romance involved, and in one spot maybe even jump a bit.

This is THE best movie I’ve seen in a while!  And as you can plainly see from my blogs, I watch a whole bunch of movies!

This is, simply put, brilliant.  You MUST watch this movie.

My only word of caution is this: There is a scene with a LOT of exposed female bodies… but it’s so artistically shot that it can hardly be considered gratuitous (no matter what the back of the box says!)

The Bourne Trilogy

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

So, today, I decided to have myself a little movie marathon.  I went with the Bourne movies, which I hadn’t seen yet.  And back to back at that.

The Bourne Identity… a DAMN good film!  nice acting, great story, and the pacing was well thought out.  It also had a great car chase and some cool fighting.

The Bourne Supremecy… pretty good story, and again the pacing was nice.  I was surpised that that taxi Jason Bourne stole kept going after being crashed so many times during that chase!

The Bourne Ultimatum… CRAP!  The story was just ok. The main car chase was WAY too similar to the one in Supremecy (the chase even ended the same!).  The ending of the film was pretty cool, but there were two main things that bugged me a bit.  1) The first half of the film is apparently REALLY part of the second film that we never got to see.  2) The whole film was shot handheld, and the damn thing shook enough that I thought I’d go into seisures!  I mean, ok, I was annoyed by the amount of handheld use done in Children of Men… the shaking in this film made CoM look like a well placed tripod shot!

August 7th DVD releases

Several new DVDs this week to get.

Disturbia

Are We Done Yet?

I Think I Love My Wife

The Salon

TMNT

Unaccompanied Minors

In Theaters August 3rd Weekend

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

There are ALMOST as many wide release films this weekend as there are limited releases.  As always, though, I’m only going to list the wide releases, since we’re not in NY and won’t get many of the limited.

The Bourne Ultimatum

Bratz

El Cantante

Hot Rod

Underdog

Hot Rod looks like it’ll either be funny, or stupid… kinda like Napolean Dynamite (which I thought was completely UNfunny, even though most people thought it was hilarious).

Underdog makes me a little mad, though.  I used to watch the cartoon when I was younger, and it looks like they just butchered it!

Click here for all the release.

Marie Antoinette

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Marie Antoinette is a period piece about… well… Marie Antoinette.  You may know her best as the Austrian-turn-French-Queen famous for the line “Let them eat cake”.

Do not… I repeat… DO NOT waste your time or money on this film.  The costumes and set design are both fantastic.  But that’s where my good comments end.  The acting was bland, the camera shots held too long, the story was slow… basically, the whole movie was one word: BORING!  That was over 2 HOURS of my life that I will never get back.  I have been told by MANY people just how bad it was… but I didn’t believe it.  I had to see for myself.  Well believe me, please.  This movie is Dullsville with a capital DULL!!!!!  I only recommend this film if you’re having trouble sleeping.
