Superman: Doomsday

We Are Marshall

Deathproof

The Condemned

I just bought Superman:Doomsday (incase that wasn’t going to be obvious to everyone who knows me) so I’ll have a review for it just as soon as I watch it.

We Are Marshall looks like it should be good, even though I’m not a big fan of sports movies.

The Condemned looks like it should be good with high levels of energy!

Death Proof was GREAT!  It was the better of the two flicks shown in Grindhouse, but I’m a little surprised it’s being released seperately… *shrugs* it’s still a damn fine film!  Pretty much the only Quintin flick I’ve seen and actually liked!

Pitch Nehst

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Producer Larry Meistrich has recently started up a brand new studio based out of New York. It’s called NEHST Creations.

Nehst has created a website called Pitch Nehst. The purpose? For independant and (this is the word you’re looking for) ASPIRING filmmakers can pitch their works to Meistrich and his company!

They’re looking for brand spankin’ new talent to back on the financial end. They’re going to financially back film productions, tv shows, and even webisodes! And if you’ve already made a killer flick, they’re going to do distribution as well!

Currently, the company has already taken on SEVEN new talents to produce including 6 from in-person pitches, and 1 from an online pitch on the website.

For more info on the company, as well as finding out how you can pitch your great ideas to the studio either in person (both one-on-one meetings and group pitches) or online (via the site and a $10 charge) check out the Pitch Nehst website!

The Brave One

Monday, September 17th, 2007

The Brave One stars Jodi Foster. In it, her and her fiance are beaten and mugged. Her fiance dies from his injuries. Afraid to go out alone, Foster buys a hand gun illegally and carries it on her… and uses it. She defends herself in a couple of instances by shooting her would-be attackers. A detective (played by Terrance Howard) on the case of these shooting befriends her, not realizing at first that she’s the “Vigilante” everyone’s talking about!

This movie is great! You should totally see this film! It’s action packed, it’s got a GREAT story with all the twists and turns a story like this would take in real life (and yet you don’t really see them coming until they smack you in the face!), and the acting is damn good.

I only have 3 problems with this movie. 1) In the beginning, when Foster is still with her living fiance and we see them together as the soon to be married folk they are, I honestly didn’t believe Foster was in love. *shrugs* maybe the characters had been together for so long that the intensity was supposed to have seeped out of the relationship slightly, but… I just didnt’ believe she was anything more than friends with the fiance character. 2) There was, at least for me, a massive over-use of a tilting camera angle. It was cool the first couple times… but halfway through the movie, I was sick of the tilts! 3) The title… She wasn’t really… BRAVE in this movie. She was normal before the incident, a chicken shit after it, and then suddenly made the jump to borderline Serial Killer! Braveness never really came into the equation.

Those critiques aside, however, this movie was damn good over all! It’s a must see.

what to write!?

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

Ok, so the very first question you need to ask yourself before you make your film is “what should I make a film about?”  That’s a pretty tricky question.  You’d better take some time to think about that.  I can’t tell you what to to make a film about, but I can make some suggestions on where to start.

A well known saying is “write what you know.”  Well, ok, that makes sence.  Especially when you’re first starting.  After all, you don’t really want to go through all the research on writting a screenplay about Jesse Marcel when you know nothing about the Roswell Crash or Area 51.  And why on earth would you try writing a script from the point of veiw of a struggling 52 year old black woman when you’re a 22 year old rich white  kid?

On the other hand, you live every day of your life with “what you know”, right?  You’re probably sick of it and don’t want to spend another second with yourself. (At least I don’t… but hey, maybe you had a better day than me!)

My opinion?  Write what you care about!  So the idea of space exploration interests the hell out of you, but you’ve never been outside of your hometown let along the stratosphere.  So what?  If you really care about space exploration, you’ll find the inspiration to find out more about it and write a convincing first draft!  And you’ll probably have fun doing it, too!

More so than writing about a guy who works the midnight shift at a plastic factory practically breaking his back everyday just so he can make his car payment.  Sure, you ARE that midnight plastic making guy with a decent car (at least until your muffler rusts through next month, and your breaks go bad a week after the muffler gets fixed.  Sorry to be the one to tell you about that!), but that doesn’t mean you should write about it!  You’ll be even MORE depressed writting about your sad sorry life than actually living it!

And please, PLEASE, do NOT write an autobiography.  An english teacher once told me (well, my class, at least) “Don’t give me the story of your life.  I don’t care.”

So figure out what you WANT to write about.  What interests you enough to sit at a computer and write a 85-130 page script over the next 3 weeks-3 years.  Then, write it.

And if I hear of ANY new movies about a guy breaking his back on the midnight shift for Plastec, I’m going to demand back end points!

In Theaters September 14

Friday, September 14th, 2007

We got 6 new titles to look forward to in theaters this weekend.

The Brave One

Mr. Woodcock

Dragon Wars

Eastern Promises

In the Valley of Elah

Across the Universe

The Brave One looks like it’s going to be great!  It seems (from the trailer) to have heart, and action, and Jodie Foster (which is always a plus!)

Mr. Woodcock might be really funny… but it also much be a crapper.

Dragon Wars looks like it’ll have a lot in intensity and cool special effects, but from the trailer that’s about all you can tell.

Across the Universe looks like a cross between a good love story, and a LSD enduced fantasy!  It looks like it’ll be really good, though odd as hell at times.

I don’t really know anything about the other two.  Sorry.

new on dvd September 11

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

There’s really not a lot of stuff coming out today… well, there’s a lot of tv shows (like Supernatural), but not a lot of big named movies.  Here’s what we’ve got, though:

Griffin & Phoenix

The House of Usher

Even Money

A Few Days in September

Ten ‘Til Noon

Snow Cake

so, basically, a bunch of indie films.  Which, if you’re like me and love indie films, this should be a great release day for you.  If you only want to see Blockbusters… not so much.

My TV show ideas for the contest, please comment!

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Ok, so, incase you haven’t already heard, Fox and Myspace are teaming up to make a contest to make the next great TV show.  Here’s the linkage for details.

Just incase you’re too lazy to click that linkage button (and shame on you if you are), the basis is this: come up with a tv show, make a 5-7 minute pilot/scene/trailer for it, and enter it in the contest.  Deadline is Nov. 1.  After that, Myspace users get a couple weeks to rate each series idea.  The top 12 voted entries will be the semi-finalists.  Myspace users will comment the top 12 and ask questions.  The top 12 make video responces to the comments and questions.  People at Fox will then judge those 12.  Top 6 are finalists, and get flown to LA in January to pitch their show ideas to Fox execs.  2 winners get $25,000 and a development deal with Fox to make their show a reality!

I had some problems coming up with ideas that could be turned into a tv show.  Coming up with a 2-hour idea?  Sure!  Coming up with a 22+hour idea? That’s a little more tricky.  BUT, I’ve been racking my brain ALL DAY and have come up with 6 ideas that MIGHT be good to fill out to at least a full season of hour-long episodes.  I like all 6 ideas (of course, I came up with them!), but there’s one in particular that I REALLY like the best.

One of the things being judged is marketability… so I obviously need an idea that a bunch of people will actually WANT to watch!  So, I’m posting the 7 ideas on here for all of you to vote on.  I’m not going to tell you which is my favorite… because I want to see if the one I like the best is the one everyone else likes the best too.

So without further ado, here’s my 6 tv show ideas.  I’ve included their titles, the premise (what the over all show is about), and the concept (what the show will be like… kindof how “Smallville” is “Justice League” meets “Dawson’s Creek”, or “American Idol” is “Starsearch” with a bigger voting radius.).  So read all 6 show ideas, and tell me which you’d ACTUALLY watch.  If you think they all suck ass, say so.  I want total honesty.

“Book Worms”
PREMISE: A group of teenagers discover a mystic book.  Using it, they are able to travel into any story from any book they read.  This ecclectic groups adventures takes them to worlds laid out in horror, sci-fi, romance, fantasy, and history.  When your homework can take you to any world of your choice, who needs a vacation?!
CONCEPT: “Sliders” meets “The Jersey”

“Lawrence Flannery: Paranormal Hunter”
PREMISE:  Meet Lawrence.  He’s a detective of the paranormal.  His agency knows what goes bump in the night, and he’s here to make it stop.  His adventures take him up against vampires, werewolves, ghosts, zombies, mummies, demons, witches, and every other creepy creature imaginable.  Just don’t call him Larry.  He hates that.
CONCEPT: “Angel” meets “Supernatural”

“What Is Suave?”
PREMISE: A group of misfit teens (a fat kid, a poindexter, a skater, a way-too-young-for-high-school genius, and a hot girl on the football team) go through all the trials of high school together (first dates, bullies, drugs, driving, parties, etc.).  They may not be the cool kids, but then, what is cool anyway?
CONCEPT: “Dawson’s Creek” meets “Freaks & Geeks”

“The Seer”
PREMISE:  Greg Hanson comes from a long lineage of psychics, all of them female.  So naturally, his sister is a successful fortune teller where as he is a news reporter.  Then, one day, he has a vision of the near future.  He thinks nothing of it, until the vision comes true 40 minutes later.  Believing it to be coincidence, he leaves it alone, until he has another vision.  This time, he decides to check it out, and 40 minutes later barely stops the tragedy from occuring.  He confides in his sister and discovers that she’s been bluffing about having a gift all this time, it’s him who has the power.  He uses his 40-minute-in-the-future visions along with his newspaper contacts to stop tragedies from occuring.
CONCEPT: “Medium” meets “24″ (each episode with exception of the first will take place in real-time)

“Invisifriend”
PREMISE:  Franklin wakes up in an alley wearing a nice suit.  He can’t remember anything about himself other than the name “Franklin”.  He wanders around, looking for help.  Not only does he find no help, but it seems nobody can see or hear him.  That is, until he comes to an Elementary school, where he is seen and heard by 7-year old Danny.  Not long after his encounter with the boy, a mysterious stranger confronts Franklin telling him that, in theory, ONLY Danny can see and hear Franklin.  “So, I’m like, what?  His gaurdian angel?” Franklin asks.  Answer: “More like… his invisible friend.”  Franklin must help Danny and himself on their adventures (both together and separately), including keeping Danny out of trouble, and solving the mystery of who Franklin really is… or was.
CONCEPT: “Heart & Soul” meets “The Invisible”

“Vigilante”
PREMISE: Ol’ Del was once Central City’s premiere costumed crime fighter.  That was more than 40 years ago.  Since then, crime has been almost wiped out and weapons abolished.  Until the sudden and unforeseen appearance of The Jade Dragon Syndicate, a terrorist mafia group wanting to bring things back to the old ways.  Del makes a feeble attempt to dawn his mask and tights to stop the gang, but at nearly 80 years old, he’s no match for them.  But his grandson is, and takes up the new mantle of Central City’s costumed hero: Vigilante.
CONCEPT: “Batman Begins” meets “The Untouchables”

So there you have it.  My  tv show ideas.   Now, if I DON’T win this contest to turn one of these into a Fox tv show, I will still write feature scripts for each.  BUT, which one do you guys think would make a KILLER tv show on Fox next fall?  I have my favorite of the bunch.  Which is yours?

can you make a FOX tv show?!

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Fox is doing a contest through Myspace.  You get to make a short vid for a tv series you’d like to make for fox.  Long story short, winner gets $25,000 and their tv show concept developed.

Here’s the linkage.  Watch the intro video, he tells all about it!
