National Treasure 2

Monday, December 31st, 2007

I LOVED the first National Treasure.  It was fun, fast paced and exciting.  The twists and turns made Davinci Code (the book, not the movie) seem not so thought out.

It was much better than this sequal, National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

I know it was the highest grossing film this holiday season.  But you know what?  It wasn’t nearly as good and exciting as the first.  Some of the clues were obvious, twists expected, and AGAIN with the…. oh, wait, sorry… that happens at the end.  Don’t want to spoil it.

Anyway, the first one was great, this one was just ok.

I Am Legend

Monday, December 31st, 2007

I Am Legend was actually really good.  I’ve heard a lot of bad reviews about it, but I don’t think they were all that warrented.

Were there flaws with this film?  Of course.  Did it stay true to Richard Matheson’s book?  Honestly, I don’t know!  I’ve been trying to get my hands on the book for TWO YEARS… all the Monroe County Library System seems to have is the graphic novel adaptation. :(

Will Smith shines as an actor… and he has to really since for 90% of the film, he’s the only actor (Besides the dog of course).

Juno

Monday, December 31st, 2007

HO…LY…CRAP!  Juno was FANTASTIC!

It’s an independant film that did GREAT on the festival circuit and is doing pretty darn good in it’s theatrical release.  It’s about a girl (Juno) who gets pregnant from a nerdy guy and tries to find a couple to adopt the child once it’s born.

It’s actually a comedy… well… a drama.. ok, it’s a dramedy!  There, happy?

The comedy part is easily on par with Superbad.  The drama is pretty powerful too.

This movie is a must see, and you’d better believe it’ll be part of my top 5 of 2007 list tomorrow!

Hairspray

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

I got suckered into watching the newest rendition of “Hairspray” last night while at my cousins’ place for Christmas.

I very much regret it!

This movie was campy as hell, it was rediculous, and there were far deeper sexual overtones throughout than there should have been.

I mean, this movie was geared toward a younger audience (Nickelodeon’s Amanda Bynes and Disney’s Zack Effron both star), so the sexuality that runs rampant throughout is totally uncalled for!

The acting was nausiating.

The music, while sung well, was cheezy as hell.

And yes, I KNOW that it’s from the musical, and remake of the original which had Riki Lake.

Lake’s version, I liked!  This one, I thought was completely rediculous and I couldn’t take it seriously at ALL!  NOT a cinematic high point!

No Country For Old Men

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Ok, I HAD to see “No Country For Old Men”.  After all, it’s been on just about everyone’s list of Top Films of 2007.

First, the acting.  The acting was brilliant.   Javier Bardem was outstanding as the killer in the film, and Josh Brolin, while non-schelant during most of the film, had me very interested in the character and what would happen to him and what he’d do next.

The movie was fantastic……………….. until the last 20 minutes.

Suddenly, this fast-paced and interesting movie switched gears and got really bad really fast.  Suddenly, near the end, there’s this scene between Tommy Lee Jones (who plays the sherriff on the case) and his father (in a wheel chair) that seems so out of place.  It’s got long winded and slow conversation that while it ads a little more depth to Jones’ character seemed unneeded to me.  I mean, Tommy Lee doesn’t have much screen time before this scene, and I prefered it that way.  He’s a side character, and not a main one.  The scene with him and crippled father seemed to just be a way to give Jones more face time.

The ending I won’t say as I don’t want to ruin it for everyone, but lets just say the end pissed me off.  I won’t say why though, because it’ll give away the ending.  If you’ve already seen it and want to find out why I disliked it so much, e-mail me at flannelmann@yahoo.com

So basically, this movie is a must see… until the last 20 minutes.
