Its not that the fish weren’t there, but the wind wasnt either. Combine windless conditions, with a hot, hazy morning and you can expect just about every type of flying insect in the area to swarm to the boat. Breathing them, swallowing them….its all protein right?
The fishing was fine in front of the power plant (Edison coal burner) in about 23 to 25 foot of water. All came on harnesses, and none on the spoons. With the super flat waters, it seemed like the bigger fish were pretty tight lipped. Out of the 37, only 3 were undersized, but the biggest was 24″. Lots of good eaters.
You can pretty much leave all the bulk of the crankbaits at home and stick with harnesses. One walleye appeared to have the VHS, had a rash, that was raised, bubbled and bloody looking on the back end of it’s tail. One of the sheephead we caught appeared to have a tapeworm clinging to its tail too. There have been lots of reports coming out of Saginaw Bay that they are in some of the walleye up there.
Just another thing to watch out for while cleaning your fish.
good luck this weekend, keep the sunblock handy
