Does everyone remember about five years ago when you went into the Sectretary of State’s office to renew your trailer plates? Without any announcemnt or fanfare, our present governor decided to eleminate the old system and install a permant license system. There were not too many happy campers at the time, due to the increased fee, and the underhanded way it was implemented.
It was a short-sighted move, aimed at only giving the state a quick injection of money into its coffers. Now, after just about everyone has a trailer plate, guess what? Yep, the state is discussing ending that permanent system. If you have a plate, you will be grandfathered in, but thats not the point is it? Anyone who bothered to look ahead, could see that the state would lose in the long run. Is it any wonder then, that the system gave the state an increase in funds during the governor’s first term, is about to end, because the second term is off to such a lousy start. Where did the money go?
How could the state be in the black before the election last November, then shortly after be $300 million in the red. Oops, there was a miscalculation, because another few months passed, and the state was 800 million in the hole.
Just like with the fishing and hunting fee increases, I have no problem paying my fair share, but I have a huge problem with just throwing more money into the fire.
Did you hear about the proposed sale of the State’s Lottery, another quick fix solution. Its time to stand up, contact your reps and senators, let them know what you think of all these “quick fix schemes”. If you have a view, pro or con on these issues, let your state representitive know how you feel.
