Sighting in Deer Guns
Tuesday, November 6th, 2007I went out this morning to sight in the .270 Weatherby that was fitted with a mag brake, by Mag Na Port. Its not an inexpensive procedure, but for those with shoulder problems like my father, even taking off a little bit of a gun that shoots like the .270 is worth it.
Even though the wind was swirling, and because of it I didnt dare monkey with the scope, it was worth the trip. Manchester is one of the prettiest areas of the state, its rolling hills and farmland mixed with woods is picturesque. The DNR facility in the area is top notch, complete with a range master who takes his safety procedures seriously. The range has a 25, 50 and 100 yard shooting area. The walk path to and from the target area is lined with those nice black rubberized mats. I wanted to get some for the shop after today’s trip.
Even though I prefer to sight my rifles in at 200 yards, you can make do by getting a group about an inch or inch and half top center. For those who take their shotgun hunting below the rifle line seriously, this is the range to go to. Its only a hour from Monroe, and offers many of the benefits of the more expensive clubs in the Monroe area. Just make sure to have your own targets, eye protection or glasses and ear plugs or muffs.
