Some Electronic Help

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Most folks know all about what you can put on your boat electronically to enhance your fishing experience to the point it is potentially more successful.  What can the ice fisherman use to help turn the tide to their favor during the winter months?  There are actually several options that can help put more fish on the ice every time you head out the door.

One of the items available, has also been on the market the longest, dating back to the 1970’s.  The flasher shows the bottom, the weeds, the fish and your jig.  The next item has been the underwater camera which has revolutionized the ways anglers see and react to fish.  The last one is courtesy of the government and traces its roots back to the military.  For the past 7 or 8 years or so, the use of GPS devices has guided fisherman back to their spots day after day.

All these electronic devices are offered by several companies, some retail stores offer the make and model under their house brand.  I will go through some of the options during the next week and half,  point out some ways to take care of the equipment and showcase some of the products available.

Capping off a good weekend on the Bay

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Sunday turned out to be the best day of fishing on Saginaw Bay this weekend.  A couple of days of steady weather meant fish were back to feeding.  A couple of cold nights meant the slush and cracks had firmed back up to make travel easier.

One nice things are the little extra bonuses that can be caught through the ice on the bay.  Down here on Erie we can catch perch with regular ease while targeting walleye.  Up there you still get the perch, but latching on to a brown trout is not uncommon either.  Another tasty surprise comes in the form of the whitefish.  Once discribed as Michigan’s greatest natural resource, the whitefish started the state’s commercial fishing industry back in the 1800’s

Family MarchbanksThis catch was brought in by the family Marchbanks,  thats Adam on the left, his uncle (center) and dad, Al on the right.  All three caught their limit of five fish, with a couple of kickers that made the day worthwhile.

hog, pig, toad....HUGEHere is Adam’s uncle with the prize of the day.  This walleye measured out at 29.5 inches.  She weighed 30 lbs and 12 ozs.

Fish this big are not uncommon through the winter months on Michigan’s Great Lakes icy bays.  Later, as spring approaches during late ice, big females like this will be coming starting the staging process for their spring runs.

whitefishHere was the bonus of the day,  I had mentioned something about whitefish earlier in the piece.  This fish at the bottom of the stack has got to be pushing close to 7 lbs, give or take some ounces.
