Latest Quad Project: Bucket Rack
Saturday, March 8th, 2008
The latest thing I did to make the Polaris even more ice fishing friendly, can also be utilized come deer season for carrying bait, feed and seed. I found this 3 bucket rack from Mad Dog several months ago. Googled the item, and found several places that carried the rack. The least expensive was found on the Kodiac Outback site.
I had ordered the rack last Saturday night, and it arrived on the date that the UPS tracking email said it would, even if it was after 7pm. Kudos to UPS for the right delivery date.
I went out to the shop, and time literally flew by as I tried to figure out the best way to mount this to the rear composite rack of the quad. It was 2 and half hours spent trying to work with the body extensions, taking the rack off, lining everything up, and putting it back together. Only to realize that I couldn’t secure the rack again along the rear rail because the mounting bracket covered the hole for the screw. UGH
By that time it was 10:30 pm. So I took off the rack, took off the brackets and lined up the spot where the hole on the rail was for the screw. Made my mark and knew I was going to have to drill through the bracket to get the screw back through. At this point enough was enough and I called it a night.
Friday morning rolls through and I don’t have to plow any snow yet, so out to the shop I go to tackle the project with a fresh perspective. Long story short, I had to drill the holes from where I had marked the night before. I also had to drill a new hole in the bottom compression plate in order for it to line up for the securing carriage bolts. Finally I get it mounted to the rack, and get the rack mounted to the quad.
Helpful hints in mounting; make sure the compression plates do not interfere with mounting the composite rack back onto the quad, make sure you have room to insert the carriage bolts through the composite rack, and have the right tools handy to get the job done. If anyone decides to get one of these, let me know and will walk you through the steps I took, you might even have some better ideas than I had. The cargo net will secure whatever you carry out with you.
