Great Lunch 2day

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

For those who grew up around Ida it was no secret that the Ida Tavern had some of the best burgers in the county.  For those who only visited,  Carl’s Hide-a-Way was the place for their famous Mexican food.

Well the Tavern is under new management and has a new name, now called RPM’s, it refers to something to do with NASCAR and all that racing stuff.   I had the day scheduled for taking off for Saginaw Bay for another day of chasing walleye, but the weather reports called for high winds, so now leaving in the morning in search of somewhat  better weather.

A GOOD friend stopped by this morning, and after talking fishing, Red Wings and a host of other topics,  we headed for town for a bite to eat and pick up some essentials at Ida’s Party Stop for the trip.  We had done lunch once already at Carl’s, so we went to RPM’s to give that a try.  They had for a special, THE BEST  fish sandwich I have had in years.  If you are cruising through Ida on Lewis Ave (it doesn’t take long) stop by and check it out.  YUM

Got the Quad packed and hitting the road….

for one last fling on Saginaw Bay.

Going to do it right this trip!  The Weber Grill is packed, charcoal, starter chimney and matches.  On the menu, dogs and brats with only one condiment, mustard, the way it should be!

If the mid-day bite slows down like it has been I am ready to do some cooking for the crew.  There are some who go to even more extremes, and for a bit you can 20 to 30 folks gathered round talking the bite, the conditions and how they caught ( or didn’t ) their fish.

For those who gather back at deer camp, it is not an uncommon ritual.  For those who have not experienced fishing on the ice, it happens too.  Its all part of the grand experience, for those who partake, they enjoy, for those who do not…..they are missing out.

Pictures and hopefully successful story, to follow!

Spring Panfish: Northland Preview

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Some of my favorite spring panfish baits were not originally designed for fishing open water, that is specifically true for two of the three Northland baits I am going to show this morning.  Northland Tackle makes some of the best baits for just about every type of fish you can think of in North America.

Micro Minnow-Jiggle Eyes

The Micro Minnow typifies what I look for in using an ice jig for spring panfish.  Its a bit larger than most of my ice jigs for gills and crappie, and more importantly the eye is above the head.  That feature allows me to cast the jig and control it better on the retrieve.  If the eye as located in the front, like on a vertical jig, the bait would swim side to side a bit, like a shimmy action.  Not exactly the most natural looking thing while being reeled back in.  What I like to do on all these baits is either put on a small plastic minnow, or like my favorite, just a 1″ or 1.5 inch curly tail grub.

Whistler Bee

The Whistler Bee,  is just a downsized version of another good walleye jig the full grown Whistler.  Again, the eye is on top, I can hook up a piece of plastic, but this bait as the added attraction of the micro sized prop behind the lead head.  It sends out vibration and adds flash.

Firefly Jig

The Firefly is probably my least used jig, but it has a definite place in my kit come spring time.  It fills that unique slot when the fish are looking for a hair jig.  It is a subtle bait, and works best when the fish are almost neutral.  Seems like it works best on a gently lift and and fall retrieve.  The light feathers will move with the water and gives the body a almost lifelike appearance.
