Almost Time (Updated)

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Last night showed that it wasn’t only the locals itching for spring to start in full force.  While walking the pups at 9:30 and again around 11:30,  I was amazed by the action going on all around me.  I just didn’t think they would be so ready to come out and play.  Everywhere  shined the spotlight there was movement.

If you haven’t guessed already, I am talking about nightcrawlers, literally thousands of them last night.  The thing that surprised me was that we didn’t really have a lot of rain up to that point.  Sure there had been a drizzle here and there, a lot of misting going on, but not the typical pounding rain for hours that will bring them out in droves.

While in Monroe later on I will pick up some worm bedding.  When I get back again I will mix the bedding with some water in a 5 gallon bucket, and get my bait canteens scraped out and ready for another season of raising crawlers in the basement fridge.  With the capacity of 50 to 70 dozen nightcrawlers, it won’t be long before I saving quite a bit of cash down there.

Last night was good, not quite prime harvest time though.  It was their first big night out,  and we really will need a good soaking rain to bring them out for some easy picking.  Now if you go out and start looking and do not see any, in most cases its due to chemical lawn treatments.

Update:  This is the type of worm bedding that I am talking about.  Went down to Matthew’s Bait and Tackle after my afternoon haircut with Debbie @ Danny’s.  The guys are really starting to get the shop ready for the full swing of the season.  This is produced by Frabill, and it is the paper based bedding.  Just add water until moist and you are ready to start putting in your crawlers.
