Not an April Fool’s Joke: Winter Blast

Friday, April 4th, 2008

I just got one of these updates from one of my cousins. I mentioned the uncle and aunt who live in the UP yesterday, their daughter. Here are some of the pictures from the 12 inches of snow that 40 mph winds brought to them the first of April. If you think the winter down here lasted long enough, think again, we had it easy.

These two are the last couple to live on the lake year round. Since there aren’t any kids going to the public school in Munising, the county does not come through to plow the road. Their mailbox is two miles down the track to FWY-13. The FWY stands for forest highway, and 13 runs through the Hiawatha National Forest. If they want to get out to the main road, it means plowing your own road. These two pics are of them clearing some of the downed trees and limbs from the road before they could begin plowing.

Once they make it to the main road, its time to turn around and do the other side of the road.  There have been nights, where it was not uncommon for them to plow three or four times a night, just to keep up with the falling snow.  Through it all, you just have to keep plugging away.  Its not unusual to get well over 200 inches of snow in a season, and unlike around here, it just doesn’t go away a couple of days later.
