Moose Sighting in the Upper
This has nothing to do with wild cougar sightings down here in the Lower Peninsula, but there be moose roaming the Upper Peninsula. Originally planted years ago on Isle Royale, located off Michigan’s shore in Lake Superior, the animals came from Canada in an attempt to repopulate the species. It is long believed that wolves escaped over the ice from the island years ago, and now it appears that the moose went that route too.
These pictures were sent to me by my aunt and uncle, who live 40 minutes south of Munising. Roughly located in the middle of the U.P., the animals could have been pushed east by this year’s heavy snow fall. It is the first time they were sighted by any of us (the family) in the area. The pics were taken on the backside of the cabin facing the lake. Although the moose might seem brave entering this area, Bess and John are the only people on the lake all year long. Most folks are just starting to head up to do their spring cleaning.

WOW Chuck … That is way cool. I’d take the moose over a cougar any day. I used to see them in the North West part of Minnesota but it has been years since I’ve seen one. I know there are some still in the North East part but it is realy nice to see them in the central part of the lower 48. Keep us posted of any more sightings. Was the DNR contacted? And if so will they be doing anything to help the population now? Has anyone else seen more of them, or do you think it might be just a lone roamer?

The email in which the pics came in was a total teaser, just the pics. I sent a return as soon as I read it, so am hopeful to hear back soon with the details.
This is a first as far as I know, the family has been going up to the area since the early 1930’s, and then started building the cabin in ‘37. No one has ever mentioned seeing a moose before, and this family loves experiencing the outdoors and talking about it!
As soon as I hear more, I will add on. A. Bess just might be getting a phone call.!!!
