Sale Items @ Walmart

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

The other day I was in the Walmart store here in Monroe and picked up a few items for this and next season.

First off,  I picked up five spools of Trilene Big Game, two green, and three clear for 5 bucks each. Really good price, when its been anywhere from $7.99 or $8.99 the last few years.  Its every bit as good as XT, also made by Trilene (Pure Fishing).  The green will be used for backing on my reels spooled with Power Pro, and will use the clear for next years harnesses and rigs.

Good hint for storage of mono lines from one year to the next.  Take a zip loc bag or better yet, if you have one of the vacuum things for meal and meat for the freezer, use that.  If you have one, get all the air out, and if you don’t, do the best you can.  Then find a place where the temps are pretty much stable all year long, and away from sunlight.  I keep my spare mono in the gun safe in the basement.

The other item I picked up was actually two marker buoys, some off brand.  Bright orange, and only $2.50 each.  I have some already, but the price was right.  These days GPS pretty much takes the place of having to use these, but  when on the small inland lakes and you just have a fishfinder on the boat, they are awfully handy to have to mark your spots.

If you go in, you might find a few other items that I didn’t notice, too.

New Tour Announced for ‘09: Hunt for the Wolf

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

On one of the fishing forums that I visit, one of the members brought this new Pike tour to everyone’s attention.  The Premier Pike Tour has announced its’ dates for 2009.  Search the site if you are interested, it sounds like a lot of fun, and the cost for entering is only $100 bucks.  Good chance I will be getting in on the Devil’s Lake Tourney off of 223, sounds like the Triton was made for this lake.

As I started today,  will be continuing the blogs on pike fishing (and muskie, too) new lakes and what to look for.

Larva Lace bought by Hagen’s

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Larva Lace, although by itself has little to do with walleye fishing, it is the maker of the Flex Loc .  Its type of head cement that I use for securing my snells for harnesses and rigs.  While placing a refill order today with the company, I was informed that it was bought out by Hagen’s , the tackle component manufacturer.

Reason’s for using Flex-Loc, are that it dries clear unlike many types of cement available to the fly fisherman.  It is also designed for use with synthetics, and won’t harm monofilament.  Meaning it won’t break down the material used in making mono or fc lines.  A single jar might last the average angler years before running out.

Attacking a New Lake Pike and Muskie

New Lakes

One of the best things to do when trying a new lake for the first time is to get a paper map and study its contours for possible areas for big pike and muskie.  You don’t  really have to switch gear to fish for both at the same time.  Pike will attack anything and almost all the time, while muskie do not necessarily need a 10 or 24 inch bait to get them to bite.

Next best way to get to know a lake is to troll around, get your lines wet and watch your fishfinder for quick changes in the lake bottom.  If your boat is equipped with GPS or you have a handheld device, start marking potential spots to come back to and cast.  If you have neither, pick up some bouys to drop down, don’t want to spend money, or a lot of it, tie up some milk jugs with a 4 oz lead weight,  if its windy double it up to an 8 oz.
