Latest Perch Reports

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Good news so far, what rain we have gotten so far has had no effect out on the lake, no muddy soup yet.  What algae that is out there seems to be coming out from the River Raisin and following a line out to the middle of the lake.  Most of Brest Bay is fairly clear.  Even better news is that with the cooling water, the fish should be coming in closer and schooling up tighter.

This should also bring some of the walleye in closer as well, we shall see how long it takes before you can start casting off of Luna Pier.

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Staying with the company from Grand Ledge right here in Michigan,  Shappell has introduced new runners for the bottoms of their Jet Sleds and Rover style shanties.  Calling them Wear Bars, these can really stretch out the lifetime of  your sled’s bottom.  Locally these are also available at Knutson’s over in Brooklyn, as well as up at Frank’s Great Outdoors.

  • Ultra High Density Polyethylene Bars.
  • Extend the Life of Sled Base.
  • Stainless Steel Hardware.
  • Water Tight Sealing Washers.
  • # SWB1:  fits Jet Sled Jr., Jet Sled SUV
  • # SWB2:  fits Jet Sled, Jet Sled XL

Rumors are that Shappell will be introducing one other item for the 2009 ice season, and it could be in the new In-Fisherman Ice Guide.  Look for a hot shanty to hit the market!

  • Did an oopse there, slid the wrong picture in the first time around.

    New Shappell HD Hitch

    Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

I tried to start this right at midnight to kick off the my October intro into ice fishing, but there must have been a maintenance thing happening with the blog site, luckily the auto save feature was still working before the lockout.

First up is the new heavy duty hitch available from Shappell .  I have one already, and it is a big improvement over what was available before.  You can tell right away, just from feeling the weight in your hand that this thing has been beefed up. When you lookfor it on the website, its under the new products for this season.  This really is the type of hitch you need for running long distances over the ice, and jumping cracks.  It was actually designed for those who run on Saginaw Bay.  It will work on my shanty or my sleds and just connects to the back of my quad by a keeper hitch pin.

Talked to the guys at Frank’s Great Outdoors, they have them in stock already.  The hitch retails for $39.99, which is really pretty good, most hitches of this quality go for at least 59 bucks, or more.

    This is what you get:

  • # JSH-HD
  • Heavy Duty 1″ Sq. Tube Arms.
  • Arms Adjust from 3″ to 30″ Wide.
  • Use with ATV or Snowmobile.
  • Pinless Connection to Sled.
  • Bindless Connection to Vehicle.
  • 40″ Long
