Shappell’s Newest Hunting Blind, or Ice Shanty?

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Ok, its actually a shanty that can easily be used as a hunting blind.  Shappell’s new Ice House Series of hub style shelters can actually double up as a hunting blind simply by removing the windows, allowing a hunter to shoot through with either a bow, rifle or shotgun.

The fish house comes in two sizes, the 5000 and 6000.  Not only does this continue the numbering sequence from the cabin series of houses, but the 5000 has a 5′x5′ flooring, while the 6000’s floor is 6′x6′ when set up.

Here are all the features that both units share and then individual numbers:

Latest Perch Reports (Updated)

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

One of the guys i talked to yesterday  pulled in 120 perch Tuesday, not a great day for three people, but a whole lot better than some of the days out there lately.  If the wind doesnt stir things up too much today, will be heading out mid-morning to see how things go.

Sounds like it will be a good day to dig out the gore-tex and fleece.

Steelies in the Huron River

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Locally it should also kick off the season for steelhead in the Huron River over in Flat Rock.  Look for the colder temps to continue, and if it holds true it will the numbers should be there. Good places are the dam in FlatRoc park near the senior center, also an angler combat zone when the fish are running. East of Telegraph look for holes in the river to start holding fish in good numbers.  If the river stays open, and it usually does, this could be a very good winter for catching steelies.

Bait of choice for the Steelhead is a small jighead tipped with waxworms. Followed by black and olive colored flies.

Is the Salmon Run finally HERE?

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

The way things are looking this could be the best weekend of the year for fishing the rivers.  Until now it has been hit and miss, but with colder temps this weekend it should send the salmon that have been staging near the mouths of the state’s rivers  up in good numbers.

October Ice Seminar Schedule

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

As of right now, I have an ice fishing seminar with the gals and guys of the Huron Valley Sportfishing Club on the 16th of October.  Although it is a member’s meeting it is open to the public, so all are welcome.  They put up a really nice banner on their website announcing the evening.
