Perch Cleaning Setup

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

When you end up cleaning a 155 perch in one day, get things organized, and make it as easy as possible for a smooth running process.

Have your fish close at hand.

This was a cut out section of countertop where a kitchen sink went in and its the cutting board that I use. The white bucket in the bottom left is my gut bucket.  I have several knives, even more not shown that are sharp and ready to replace a knife that goes dull.  I also have a inexpensive squeegee to wipe away slime as a I go through the process.

Two trays are kept on hand for the fillets, and then one for when the skin has been removed.  After taking the fillet off the fish, the first one contains ice water.  It firms up the fish and when ready to remove the skin, it makes the process easier.

I also sit when cleaning this many fish, so much easier on the back,  you can usually pick up one of these old office chairs fairly cheap at discount stores or when offices replace when remodeling.

StrikeMaster Streamlines the Power Auger Lineup

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Gone is the fancy four bladed cutting power auger from the StrikeMaster lineup.  To be truthful, I am kind of glad they dismissed it.  When do you need to replace your blades? Usually while you are fishing, on  a trip….suffice it to say, at a time when  it would be most inopportune to have a equippement failure.  Replacement blades these days are running in the mid 30 dollar range for one pair and to dish out an additional 35 bills, never sits well while on a long trip.

What we have left standing is the latest in StrikeMaster tech, the Strike-Lite which has been on the market for the past 3 years.  With its 4-stroke technology and lightweight composite shaft, it offers a clean running lightweight option for many anglers.  The Mag 2000 is a durable 2-stroke model that has been around for years and years.  It runs a chipper style blade and has been a workhorse in the company’s lineup.  The least expensive in the power auger lineup, it is far from a “cheap” auger,  it is my first recomendation for anyone in buying mode, but doesn’t want to spend a lot of money.

My choice, has been around for years, as well,  the Lazer Mag Express.  Call it dumb luck, but I wanted a two bladed auger and when I was searching I found it on sale.  This will be my 8th season with the Mag Express with its 10 inch lower unit. At the time I purchased the auger, I called StrikeMaster and bought an additional 7″ cutting auger.  The “seven” covers all my inland lake fishing for gills, crappie and perch.  The 10 inch is easy to switch over to, and it was what I used out on Saginaw Bay for the big walleye, and what I take to the UP for my pike fishing forays.

They also have a quiet running electric model with a rechargeable 12 volt battery.  You should be able to cut 30 or more holes with this in a normal day of fishing, and can be recharged out on the ice from your quad or snowmobile battery.
