Tony Dean Passed Away

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Many folks in this area do not know of  this (far) MidWest outdoor icon, but Tony Dean passed away yesterday. One of my first ice fishing videos featured Tony and Dave Genz fishing around the country during first ice conditions.  These guys moved from state to state as the ice developed, and really talked about equipment for the first time in an industry type video. One quote was of Dean saying, ” You’ve seen it here first folks, Dean caught a bigger crappie than Genz.”  Or was it a bluegill?

Check out all the great pics on the website.

A Good Ice Fishing Question via Vexilar

Monday, October 20th, 2008

I had an excellent question directed my way via the Vexilar’s Pro Staff page.  Basically, “Do I need the dual transducer for an FL-20?”, was the question.

This individual is fishing Lake Winnabago in Wisconsin where the max depth if less than 23 foot, all depending on current water levels.  Vexilar’s dual transducer is 19′’s at the high end and 9′ at the low end.  For everything that this lake has to offer, 19′ will get the job done.

I run 12 degree ducers on both my FL-20’s, the one I fish with, and my backup during the tournaments.  Its a catch-22, and I prefer to be caught in the middle of the two cone angles. 12 degrees gives me a tighter view in shallower water than the 19′ cone, and a little more room in  close than the 9′ ducer.

I can fish deep, deep…without a lot of signal loss,  and get in tight in the midst of other anglers with their units.  While using a 12 degree ducer, I can effectively knock out anglers around me with the patented signal interference rejection system, 10 steps no less.  While fishing the last NAIFC championships in 2007, this was extremely helpful!
