Late Fall Walleye Techniques: Trolling 4 Eyes

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Its that time of the year, and the walleyes will be coming in again.  So is fall trolling for walleyes any different than any other time of the year?  Yes, and no is the over simplified answer to the question.

Fall trolling is much like spring trolling for walleye.  The fish are in close, so you break down the techniques to match the situation.  Like in the spring snap weights and leadcore lines rule the “how to” part of it all.  The main differences are two fold; one is that fishing seems more productive in the evening vs the spring morning bite.  This actually works in the anglers favor, because it gives the day time to warm up a little, its still a cold run back in, but you deal with it.

The second main difference is the types of bait used.  I will put away my much loved crawler harnesses with the spinners and break out the crankbaits.  Stick baits like Original Floating Rapalas work well with lead core or running the weights.  Slightly deeper divers like Husky Jerks and Jointed Shad Raps are productive this time of the year in close.  Jointed Bombers rock, specially the redhead/Ghost white bellies.

Best places to hit in this area are in front of the Huron River out on the lake, inside Brest Bay, or out near Luna Pier.  Also the humps down by  Consumers are just as productive now, and they will be in the spring.
