A Funny Thing Happend While Perch Fishing Wednesday

Had a late start today in search of more of the perch that we caught on Tuesday. It started off pretty nice, 10 inch perch right off the bat. Then my dad’s ultra light rod doubled over and the Daiwa started screaming. We were in 21′ of water, out where the sheephead had been before, using a 2 hook vertical perch rig.

He grabs the 20 lb rig and hauls in a 20 inch walleye. I would have gotten the net, but he said he wanted it to be a surprise! What is it with fathers? I think they look forward to shocking the kids, no matter how old they are. Funny thing is, it never hit the bait and ran. It sucked the shiner in, and never went up or down, but just started to swim off. He said he only noticed the line starting to head into the waves rather than staying vertical.

Couple of minutes later, I had a hard hit on the Avid, and it doubled my rod over, again the Daiwa was giving line. Because it was a hard bite, I thought for sure I had a bigger perch on the other end. Turned out to be a smaller 13 inch walleye.

We caught a few more perch, and then the white perch came in pretty thick and just started nibbling our minnows off the hook. So we went inside the bay to look for whatever would take our bait. It turned out to be uneventful, but the screen on the fish finder was a alive with fish. Eighteen foot of water, 9 to 13 foot down, solid walls of fish going across the screen!

As we headed back in, more boats were coming out to fish the first few hours of darkness trolling, jigging and casting for walleye.
