Slow Pickings

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Well the rain stopped, winds kicked up and temps dropped down, all three factors making last nights crawler operation a tedious one at best. I was able to score some, but had to work way to hard for it.  Late night and 15 bucks at the bait shop short.  That’s what I had to pay Saturday at the bait shop for nightcrawlers.  I ended up just mixing those with the dozen or so I got last night.

If you have never kept your own crawlers for a season here are couple of quick tips that may help you save some bucks and keep you in worms all through the summer months.

I start out with Frabill worm bedding.  Its basically some type of newspaper bedding where you add water.  The key is not to have it sopping wet, if that happens mold and rotted worms are the results.  Its fairly inexpensive and easy to mix up quickly.  There are other alternatives, but this works for me.

bedding

I keep them in an old fridge down in the basement in one of the original Bait Canteens.  I still have three of them, but may have to work on replacing a side or two in the next few years.  Even so, not bad for the 30 or so years they have been in the family.  Today there are foam alternatives, and Frabill makes a wide range of sizes to fit  your needs, and there are still variations of the ol’ Canteens around too.

Finally just place your crawlers up on top of the bedding.  They will work themselves down into the mix.  Frabill and a few other companies make worm bedding food, and I use Magic’s worm food.  Comes in a shaker can like parmesan cheese.  Once a month I will feed them, and shake up the box by turning it upside down and giving it a few quick jolts.  It keeps the bedding from compacting and seems to keep the worms alive.  If the bedding begins to dry out, and in the frost free fridge’s they will, just ad a couple of ice cubes on top and let them slowly melt into the mix.

Tonight Should be a Prime Crawler Night

Monday, April 20th, 2009

If these slightly warmer than predicted temperatures continue, and it doesn’t stop raining too soon, tonight should be one of those rare Prime Time crawler catching nights.  Time to get the bedding and the boxes ready, and start preparing for a good haul.

What could set this off as a really good night is that the nightcrawlers could be out of the holes and squirming around.  Anytime you can just pick them up and not drag them out of their holes is a good thing.  You get more, get them faster and you don’t do any damage  while they try to get back down the hole.

Cranking Reef Runners Key to FLW Top Finishes

Monday, April 20th, 2009

After picking through articles and FLW reports from this weekends tournament at Port Clinton, going slow and trolling cranks seemed to have been the key to taking the top places at the kick-off event for the tournament season.

1.1 to 1.4 miles per hour, and trolling big angled cranks like Reef Runners were the key for the guys who took home the money.  15 to 20 foot of water were the depths that produced the best for the pro anglers last weekend.

Lure presentation changed with the conditions.  Bright colors when it was nice and sunny, and darker colors when the day became overcast.  Not sure when that was though as my face is still red from the sun.  Another key was to do some slow S-turns while trolling to help the cranks slow down, suspend and then speed up as the turn straightened out.

Getting Drunk and Dirty

Monday, April 20th, 2009

If you like vension, or even if you want to try it with beef, you should try this marinade.  Its set up for a loin or a roast to put in the smoker, but yesterday I used it on venison steaks on the grill.  It was really good.

Only Two Places for Ohio Licenses in Monroe

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

The grand plan Saturday was to head out of Bolles Harbour and pick up our Ohio fishing licenses at the Erie Party Store there in the harbor.  But after some positive fishing reports we decided to change up and head out from the state park.

We stopped at Jeff’s, no Ohio license.  From there we went to the State Park Party Store,  no license there…………the only other place in Monroe to get an Ohio license is the Brest Bay Party Store on the corner of Dix and Brest Bay Road.

Keep it in mind when you head out to get your licenses, and good luck.

Saturday on Erie

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Never had such a beautiful day be such a downer before.  Weather was right, had the shorts on, cold beer on ice, good friends…………..and some of the dirtiest water I have ever seen.

Brest Bay was socked in with milky water.  The River Raisin was spewing dirty run-off, and between the bay and the channel was that thin blue line I always look for! Trolled down the mudline, and back up the mudline, ended up near Stoney Point.  Not one fish, let alone a bite.

So, pack up the gear and head south for Ohio waters.  Ended up between the Toledo light and Turtle Island and started drifting.  Threw out two drift bags off the rear and threw in a 3/4 oz Whistler Jig.  My neighbor and his brother tossed out both hair jigs and blade baits like the Vibe and Cicada.  Again the water was pretty milky when we started our drift.

Near the end of the drift I pulled in one drift bag and one of the guys had put out a harness on a 2 oz bottom bouncer, just to switch things up.  The wind picked up and the blade started turning…rod bends over!  At the same time my neighbor has hits on a chartreuse hair jig.  His brother pulled up a nice 22.5 inch male that weighed a healthy 4.2 lbs.

I fillet it up after getting home and cannot wait to cook these yummy treats up.  And you know I got the cheeks!!!

Lake Erie Report for Friday and Saturday

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Look alive folks, the fishing is here and now for Lake Erie in Michigan waters.  I called both the Erie Party Store and Sterling State Party Store to get the latest reports before heading out tomorrow, and both report fishing being caught.  Cranks, hair jigs and minnows and harness rigs all are catching walleye RIGHT NOW.  Which means the waters have warmed up enough for some of the runs to start.

In addition, there are perch being caught inside Brest Bay too.  Which means I have to tie up some fresh perch rigs for this year a few months earlier than I expected!  If we can get a early walleye limit, why not utilize your time and chase some perch as well.

Erie bait will have a fresh delivery sometime in the morning if you are heading out, and Sterling just had a delivery this afternoon, both will be stocked up for the weekend.

FLW now on Versus

Friday, April 17th, 2009

While checking out the standings after the first day in Port Clinton, I noticed that the FLW shows have switched from FOX to Versus (VS).  Still on Sundays, but times very from Noon to 1pm.

4/15 AAA Fishing Report for Michigan

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

High winds, rain and overall inclement weather this week has stirred up the waters in many areas. A bright spot for anglers, the weekend will warm up and fishing opportunities should improve. Before heading to your fishing destination, visit www.AAATraffic.com for the latest traffic, construction, weather and road conditions that may affect your route.

Upper Peninsula:

Lake Gogebic still has good ice however temperatures are on the rise in the area. Anglers are doing well for perch on wigglers. Some of the inland lakes around Bergland are giving up crappie and blue gill.

Marquette anglers are finding that the river systems off of Lake Superior are not really producing any fish just yet due to the cold water, still a chilly 36 degrees. However, anglers trolling in 25-feet of water on Lake Superior are pulling in some decent Coho with hard baits.

Angling is slow overall in the Escanaba area. No action on the Bay yet and there is open water south of Gladstone. The Big Cedar River is giving up some brown trout and splake. Anglers are doing well trolling with Rapalas and Storms in 8-15 feet of water along the shore.

Indian Lake has one large chunk of ice still floating but that isn’t stopping anglers in small boats from going out to it and fishing for perch.

The Manistique River has all the gates open and fishable. Anglers are drifting with spawn for steelhead action. Smelt dipping is starting to pick up and 3 a.m. seems to be the best timeframe at this point.

Off of Sault Ste. Marie the Bay’s still have ice on them and perch action is hit or miss. A few anglers are attempting to put boats in, but overall angling seems to be in a transition period.

Anglers are still ice fishing in the Munuscong area. Good perch action on Munuscong Lake using minnows and teardrops. So far no smelt dipping taking place in the area.

Around Drummond Island, Whitney Bay still has ice fishing taking place and anglers are reeling in some perch. The ice is starting to show signs of deterioration.

Off of Cedarville perch are hitting on teardrops with a wiggler.

Around St. Ignace the ice is deteriorating particularly around the shoreline, out in the middle the ice is good but getting to it can be rough. Overall, activity is very limited at this point.

Information Providers: Bayview Bait & Tackle-Escanaba; Gogebic Grocery-Marenisco; Top O’Lake Sport-Manistique; Gander Mountain-Marquette; Hank’s Sporting-Sault Ste. Marie; Johnson’s Sports-Drummond Island; Wilderness Treasurers-Munuscong Bay and ACE Hardware-St. Ignace.

Northwest:

Alanson anglers are finding fair to good action for steelhead off the break wall in Petoskey. The Pigeon River is good for sucker fishing with night crawlers. Crooked and Pickerel lakes both have open water and Burt Lake is partially open.

Around the Traverse City area, Suttons Bay is giving up perch and cisco off of the deep water points. Overall the bite is fair to good with wigglers. The Betsie River is giving up nice counts of steelhead, while the Boardman is currently slow. Crystal and Big Glen lakes are producing a few perch.

Action is picking up around Frankfort where steelhead are starting to really move. Anglers are Finesse fishing and yarn balls, spawn and night crawlers are also working well. The Platte River is slow with a few steelhead on the move and suckers are hitting on anything.

Around Kalkaska, Skegemog Lake has some fair to good activity for perch on wigglers and minnows. Steelhead activity is rated fair to good for Elk Rapids Dam and the Boardman River when using jigs with wax worms.

Gaylord anglers finding decent action for steelhead using spawn on the Boyne, Jordan and Sturgeon rivers. Plenty of catch and release fishing is taking place on the Black, Au Sable and Manistee rivers.

In the Cadillac area, fair to good crappie fishing is taking place off of the causeway and city docks using minnows.

Information providers: Alphorn-Gaylord; Backcast Fly Shop-Frankfort; Jack’s Sports-Kalkaska; Pilgrim’s Village-Cadillac; Young’s Bait Shop-Alanson and Gander Mountain-Traverse City

Off of the Ludington pier and the Pere Marquette River the steelhead and brown trout are on the move and anglers are getting good results with spawn. Suckers are also active on worms. Pan fish are moving into the shallow waters of Hamlin Lake and activity is picking up. Perch are hitting on wigglers and minnows on the Pere Marquette Lake, Pentwater Lake and White Lake.

Anglers are finding good action in and near the Baldwin area, much improved over last week. The Manistee River up to the Tippy Dam has very good steelhead activity. Small stone flies, Hex and Nuke egg patterns are working well. The Pere Marquette River is low and crystal clear and giving up steelhead in the early morning hours and before dark. Day fishing isn’t so great the fish seemed to be spooked due to the low water. Browns are found in the deeper holes behind the steelhead and spawn type patterns seem to be working well. Wolf Lake has a few bass to be had. Big Bass Lake is giving up a few perch on wigglers and wax worms.

Anglers in Muskegon are anxious to see the cold, wet and windy conditions leave the area. Lake Michigan is producing plenty of steelhead for some great fishing off the break wall using spawn bags. An occasional brown trout is mixed in. The west end of Muskegon Lake is the best spot for some perch action. Anglers are getting up to two dozen fish per boat, but sorting is also necessary. A variety of baits seem to be working that include; spikes, mousies, wigglers, minnows, cut bait and eyeballs. Fishing in 42-29 feet of water in the front channel to the yacht club is a good location.

Chippewa Lake anglers again this week are doing very well for specks throughout the channels. Minnows are working well. Bigger fish are starting to move in.

All around the Grand Rapids area the inland lakes are picking up for crappie and blue gill. The Grand River near the Sixth Street Dam has great steelhead action as well as the smaller rivers in the area. Near Ionia, Morrison Lake is producing decent perch and near Whitehall, White Lake is also giving up decent perch opportunities. Off of Lake Michigan anglers are doing well fishing from piers for walleye using Rapala Husky Jerks and Countdown Rapalas.

Off of the New Buffalo pier in 20-feet of water the Coho action is good with fish in close. A few Kings are being caught by anglers in boats fishing in 25-40 feet of water.

Good fishing around the Kalamazoo area. The steelhead and walleye activity has picked up on the Kalamazoo River near the Allegan Dam. Spawn and minnows are the baits of choice. Sugarloaf and Portage lakes are rated fair to good for blue gill on live bait. Off of the St. Joe pier body baits and Rapalas are doing the trick on Coho, brown trout and whitefish. Anglers fishing the pier in South Haven are pulling in some whitefish and Coho.

Information providers: Tackle Haven-Benton Harbor; D. & R. Sports-Kalamazoo and Captain Cook’s-New Buffalo.

Northeast:

Alpena angling is fair to good for steelhead near the Ninth Street Dam and Thunder Bay River. Fair action for walleye during the evening hours is taking place off of the break wall using Rapalas.

Around Oscoda more fish are moving into the Foote Dam Pond since all the ice is gone. The Au Sable River is fair to good for steelhead activity with spawn, wax worms, wigglers and flies working well.

Lake Margrethe near Grayling is overall slow for perch activity using minnows, but the pan fish are starting to come into the shallows. Most rivers and streams are starting to pick up for steelhead action on spawn and flies.

Houghton Lake is back in action with some decent crappie and blue gill fishing. The canals are the best locations and using minnows and wax worms.

Still no angling activity for Higgins Lake, the ice is still floating around.

Action is good around Au Gres for walleye off the break wall and near the mouth of the Au Gres. Boating activity is picking up as well. Good results taking place with Rapala Deep Downs, Rapala Floaters in size 13 and 18, Rapala Husky Jerks in size 12 and 14 and bombers. Steelhead action is good at the Singing Bridge and East Branch of the Au Gres River. Spawn, small Cleo’s and small Rapalas in size 7 and 9 seem to work fairly well. The Rifle River has some good sucker fishing with crawlers, yarn and sponge doing the job.

Information providers: Clem’s-Alpena; Skips-Grayling; Lyman’s-Houghton Lake; Sports Barn-Higgins Lake; Wright’s Sport Shop-Au Gres and The Dam Store-Oscoda.

East:

Bay City anglers are headed to the Kawkawlin River for walleye action. Perch are hit or miss in the cuts around Bay City on minnows. Angling activity is starting to pick up around Bay Port after plenty of wind and cold weather. Some perch are being caught near the public access in the evening hours and around the marinas activity is slower. Sebewaing fishing is fair to good for perch, but fish are small in size with crawlers and minnows working ok.

Weather has created slow action for Standish anglers on Eagle Bay. A few small perch are hitting in the cuts. Some walleye are biting near the mouth of the river jigging with minnows. Warmer weather expected Thursday should improve action by the weekend.

Port Huron and Sanilac fishing has been limited this week due to high winds and dirty water. Some Kings, Coho and steelhead are biting during the day. Smelt dipping is good close to shore. Coho are being caught in Lexington Harbor right from the dock on Cleo’s and crawlers. The Black River is giving up good size Coho and steelhead. And as soon as the water clears up the walleye action will be great.

Information providers: 1st & Main-Bay Port; Anderson’s Pro Bait-Port Huron; Michigan Sportsman-Bay City and Eagle Bay Marina-Standish.

Central:

Lansing fishing is still on the slow side but coming to life each day that it warms up. Steelhead activity is picking up on the Grand River and sucker fishing is great near Omer while the pan fish are just becoming active. A few anglers are catching and releasing bass. Downriver from Lansing the Grand River is good for steelhead action.

Near Brooklyn the crappie are coming back in to feed after the cool weather earlier this week. Inland lakes in and around the area will be great for crappie and blue gill fishing this weekend. Expect the fish to be active in the shallow and warm waters during the afternoon while the sun is blazing. Wax worms, spikes and spiders will do the job.

Information providers: Knutson’s Live Bait-Brooklyn and Grand River Bait and Tackle-Lansing.

Southeast:

Fair Haven anglers are doing well for blue gill around Harsen’s Island using pieces of crawler, wax worms or bobber fishing. The St. Clair River is producing some Coho and a few walleye. Some anglers are catching and releasing a few bass out of Anchor Bay.

Near Harrison Township the walleye action is pretty good in the north channel of the St. Clair River, in the deep waters around Algonac and in the Detroit River in 20-30 feet of water either vertical jigging and deep trolling. The St. Clair River is also good for whip fishing and using pencil plugs. Lake St. Clair is not so hot for walleye due to the spawning process right now. The Clinton River is giving up nice steelhead catches at the dam and spillway. Perch and sucker action is good around Metro Beach the mouth of the spillway.

Now that the wind and cold weather is moving out the walleye action is picking up again on the Detroit River from Ecorse to Wyandotte but fish are not hitting in great numbers. Anglers are jigging in 15 feet of water or less, or 35 feet and deeper before 10 or 11 in the morning for best results. The Great Lakes Steel Mill is a good location and on the Canadian side around Fighting Island. Plastic baits in bubblegum and chartreuse seem to work well.

From Trenton to Gibraltar the Detroit River is good for walleye catches as well as near the mouth of the Detroit River, the east side of Grosse Ile and near Dunbar Sullivan. A variety of baits are working for anglers that include; big walleye minnows, four-inch Finesse Tails and Wyandotte Worms and stinger hooks are essential. The average walleye is weighing in around six pounds, but a few have been caught in the 11-12 pound range. Get in the action the “Michigan Walleye Tournament” takes place Saturday and Sunday on the Detroit River, launching out of Lake Erie Metro Park, call 734-379-9762 for details.

Rain and windy conditions limited angling in the Monroe area earlier this week stirring up the Lake and making it look like chocolate it could take three to four days for the water clarity to return. Off of the Edison piers the Hot Hole is giving up white bass and catfish on shrimp and minnows. Anglers are casting off of the Luna Pier in the evening hours with bombers and getting good results.

Ford and Belleville lakes both have some good fishing for blue gill and crappie on just about anything. Best locations are near the boat launch and near the bridges.

In Ohio the warm waters are creating for excellent walleye action near the Toledo Light, on the Maumee River, around Turtle Island and in the shipping channels. For information on how to obtain an Ohio fishing license in Michigan, call 734-457-0006.

April 16th: MI DNR Fishing Report

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

It looks like spring fishing has finally begun, at least in the Lower Peninsula. Some waters around the state are muddy due to recent rains and strong winds. Warm weather by the end of the week should make for some good fishing.

Southeast Lower Peninsula

Lake Erie - Has been rough and muddy. Few anglers had been out.

Huron River - Steelhead anglers are catching fish on spawn, wax worms, flies, small jigs or small spoons.

Detroit River - East winds have muddied up the waters but anglers are still walleye fishing. Most are jigging minnows with stinger hooks. Boats are launching from Metro Park or Elizabeth Park.

St. Clair River - Boat and shore anglers up near Port Huron continue to catch steelhead, coho, walleye and even some suckers.

Lexington - A few anglers have been out catching the occasional steelhead.

Port Austin - Some coho and a couple of big brown trout were taken by shore anglers in the lower end of Bird Creek.

Saginaw Bay - Lots of small perch means lots of sorting in both the lower Pine and the cut at the end of Palmer Road. Bigger fish have been caught on the right days. When boat anglers can get out, they found some bigger fish out near the commercial nets. Perch have been caught from the docks at Linwood Marina, inside Eagle’s Landing, and at the end of Sagatoo Road. Good catches of walleye were taken near Channel Island and off the mouth of the Kawkawlin River when vertical jigging or trolling planer boards with body baits. At Caseville, the occasional walleye has been caught by those fishing lake ward off the pier.

Saginaw River - Some decent size perch were caught in the lower river from the Bay Aggregate cut.

Quanicassee River - Has been slow with only a few perch caught.

Sebewaing River - Has lots of small perch however the river and the marina are full of emerald shiners. That much forage in one place will make it hard to catch a fish.

Pigeon River - Has lots of small perch in the river and the marina basins. Be ready to sort out the small ones.

Southwest Lower Peninsula

St. Joe - Fishing is good with boats catching coho when trolling off the bottom along the mud lines. Pier anglers caught good numbers of coho and whitefish on spawn.

St. Joe River - Steelhead are still passing through the ladder at Berrien Springs. A few brown trout have been caught.

South Haven - Pier anglers are taking a fair number of coho when still-fishing.

Grand Haven - Anglers were targeting steelhead and brown trout but catch rates were spotty. Pier anglers have caught a few menominee. Boats were trolling along the shoreline in shallow waters for brown trout. Stick baits in a “tiger pattern” have produced fish. Some lake trout have also been caught but the fish need to be released immediately because the season does not open until May 1st.

Grand River at Grand Rapids - Has started to clear up. Anglers are still catching steelhead with the better fishing between the dam and Wealthy Street. There is still a good number of chrome fish in the river and they seem to be hitting on spawn or yarn. Carp and suckers are also being caught. Bruce Bayou is producing some nice bluegill and crappie. Try wax worms, leaf worms or minnows.

Grand River at Lansing - Steelhead are still being passed through the ladder at Webber Dam. Those fishing over at Moore’s Park are catching them when floating crawlers under a bobber. The rain should push more fish up into the Lansing area.

Reeds Lake - Perch fishing has been good. The channels are producing fair to good numbers of crappie and bluegills.

Muskegon - Pier anglers are catching steelhead and brown trout. Boat anglers have been trolling just outside the piers.

Muskegon Lake - Anglers are still catching yellow perch. The better fishing has been along the west side of the lake between the channel and the Yacht Club in 42 to 49 feet of water.

Muskegon River - Fair to good steelhead action from the mouth to Bridgeton.

Whitehall - The brown trout and steelhead action continues to be slow. The occasional brown trout was caught by boats trolling in 8 to 10 feet of water between the sandbars.

White Lake - There are still a lot of perch being caught in front of the old Post Office, where the lake meets the channel, and off the northwest point nearest the channel.

White River - Steelhead action continues up near Hesperia.

Northeast Lower Peninsula

Rockport - Anglers are steelhead fishing off the pier. Most are casting spawn but some were bobber fishing in 5 feet of water. The docks are not in yet; therefore, not much boat activity.

Alpena - A limited number of walleye have been caught near the mouth when trolling body baits.

Thunder Bay River - Those fishing for steelhead are casting or still-fishing with spawn or flies. There have been reports of brown trout caught behind LaFarge when trolling body baits.

Harrisville - Boat anglers able to get out have caught steelhead, brown trout and even some walleye in 15 to 20 feet of water in front of the harbor. They are trolling with planer boards or long lining with body baits. Good colors were silver or fire-tiger. Some walleye were caught off the north wall on body baits.

Houghton Lake - Is ice free and those fishing the canals have started to catch bluegill and crappie.

Oscoda - Walleye fishing had started to pick up and then slowed again. Look for the action to pick back up once the temperatures warm up.

Au Sable River - Steelhead are in the river. Both shore anglers and drift boats are catching fish on spawn or body baits.

Tawas - Lots of small perch have been caught in the harbor. The average is 5 to 7 inches but some keepers in the 8 to 9 inch range were also caught. Those fishing on the lake side of the pier have caught a few walleye, steelhead, brown trout and the occasional salmon. Boats are trolling for walleye with planer boards and rapalas in front of the river and down toward Alabaster.

Au Gres - Boats trolling off the mouth of the river with planer boards and body baits were catching walleye.

Au Gres River - Over near the Singing Bridge, steelhead anglers were doing well when using spawn in the lower Whitney Drain. Surfcasting also produced fish.

Rifle River - It looks like the sucker runs have peaked near Omer, but anglers fishing further up near Sterling were still catching good numbers of fish.

Northwest Lower Peninsula

Traverse City - Both bays are open. Boat anglers are searching for steelhead, brown trout, lake trout, whitefish and perch but catch rates have been slow.

Elk River - Fishing has been slow with the colder weather. A few fish were caught when using spawn or wax worms.

Boardman River - Catch rates have been hit-or-miss with the better success while surf casting off the mouth and off the Maritime Dock when using spawn or wigglers. Warmer weather should kick the fishing in high gear.

Frankfort - Pier fishing was slow. Boats trolling for brown trout reported fair catch rates when they can get out.

Betsie River - Steelhead anglers are taking fish. Some days are better than others.

Manistee - Pier fishing was spotty. Boat anglers are catching brown trout when trolling in the harbor and out around the piers. Clown, fire-tiger and chartreuse patterns were catching fish. Strong winds have hampered spring trolling.

Manistee River - There were some good catches up near Tippy Dam but overall, the run is a little slow due to cold temperatures and lack of rain. The bright side is that steelhead fishing will extend throughout the month of April.

Ludington - Steelhead and brown trout fishing off the piers remains slow. Boat anglers have caught brown trout when trolling along the shoreline with body baits. Green and orange were good colors. Strong winds have hampered fishing.

Pentwater River - Pier fishing has been slow. A few brown trout were caught by those trolling in 10 feet of water between the sandbars.

UPPER PENINSULA

Keweenaw Bay - Several coho and a couple rainbow trout were taken through the ice near L’Anse but the ice has since deteriorated to the point of dangerous. No luck on the piers yet. Boats are trolling but few fish were caught. Look for catch rates to improve with spring rains and warmer temperatures.

Fall’s River - Slow catch rates for those targeting rainbow trout.

Marquette - Steelhead have been caught out from the mouth of the rivers when trolling spoons and body baits. Coho were caught in both the upper and lower harbor when using jigs with twister tails and cut bait. Pink has been a good color. Rain is needed to bring steelhead into the rivers.

Menominee River - Anglers are starting to pick up some nice walleye when trolling in shallow waters and near the mouth of the river. Those wading and casting from shore had limited success. Evenings were best for walleye. Those trolling or casting were using a #9 blue and white rapalas. Suckers are starting to show up in the river. Steelhead and brown trout action was slow.

Cedar River - The docks are in at the public access site and at Stony Point. The water levels are low so there has not been much fishing activity. Boats are starting to troll the shoreline near the mouth and also the shallows for splake and brown trout. A few fish were caught on different colored plugs.

Au Train - Some nice catches of coho are coming from the mouth of the Rock River on spawn bags and crawlers.

Munising - Fishing was slow, warmer weather is needed. The ice is deteriorating and the shoreline has slush as the pressure cracks start to open up. Further out, there is ice however much of the surface is covered with honeycomb ice. Anglers need to use extreme caution.

Munuscong - A limited number of anglers are targeting perch off Grassy Island or in Fowlers Bay.

De Tour - Anglers are targeting steelhead in Albany Creek when still-fishing with spawn bags.

Cedarville and Hessel - Anglers are catching perch along the west end of Musky Bay. They are taking boats across Snows Channel to get to the ice and fishing minnows in 6 to 8 feet of water. Little Joe Island is also producing fair numbers of perch for those using wax worms in 3 to 4 feet of water.

Carp River - Anglers are steelhead fishing at the mouth or at the first bridge off Mackinaw Trail. Most are using spawn bags.
