Goodies on Sale @ Bass Pro Shops

Friday, May 8th, 2009

The sale lasts from May 16th through the 26thand is for the Rossford, OH store. If you are one of my readers north of Monroe, and your drive to Auburn Hills is closer, you should check first by calling to see if they are having the same sale.

There are several items of interest on sale, but first and foremost safety should be an issue when boating and fishing.  May 16th and 17th they are holding a Life Jacket Trade-In Day.  I tried to call and get some details this morning, but it seems like the phones must be ringing off the hook down there, and the line has been busy.  Definitely worth looking into, specially considering the drowning a year or two ago, where the individual was wearing a life jacket, unfortunately it was too old, and the material had started to break down.

I will look through the add sent to me, and pick out some items related to fishing, and just some really good buys.

Smokey Mountain Propane Smoker: Reg $149, on sale for $129.94.  Good sale price, not great, but you do get a free outdoor cover and a meat hook included with that.  Comes out to a very nice deal.  Its the same company that made my smoker, except one size smaller.  I have been more than happy with mine, starts up every time.

Lots of styles and prices of cargo shorts on sale.  These are great for fishing with the extra set(s) of pockets available.  Sale price range from 15 bucks to $29.99.

Columbia fishing shirts, Bahama II long and short sleeves for $39.99.  Have been wearing Columbia for many years now, and really like the fact the material dries so fast and all the vents keep you cool on really hot Lake Erie days.  Take a good look at Bass Pro’s house brand of shirts as well, different material, but many still vented and half the price.

Reef Runners, every model except the two sizes of RipShads, only 5 bucks each, 5 for 25.00.  (includes 500, 600, 700, 800 models)

Wolverine “Silver Streak” Crawler harnesses for $2.49 each, regular $3.79 and 3.99 ea.

Michigan Stinger Scorpion Spoons, 6 for 19.94, regular $ 4.99 each.  Its a good sale price, but their regular price is a bit steep for everyday.  Close to 3.99 is the norm.

Walker Deeper Divers 20% off, the small 45’s have been popular the last couple of years for getting spoons and harnesses down deep.

100 qt Coleman cooler for $49.99,  its big enough for a fish cooler, and won’t break the bank, good deal.  These are limited quantities so I would call ahead and reserve one.

Bass Pro Cooker with Aluminum Pot, this is the same deep fryer that I use for fish and fries, 10 bucks knocked off, selling for $29.94

Bass Pro Fillet glove for $4.69, 33% off.  After filleting hundreds of perch last fall, this sounds like a cheap investment.  Wonder if it would work for peeling potatoes?

$2 bucks off lure trays/boxes.  These are the ones similar to the Plano trays, a good price.

Not on sale, but the full lineup of Lowrance’s new HD models. Would be worth the trip to see what they are like.

If you have been dragging your hair jigs  a bit too fast out between Turtle Island and the Lighthouse, they have drift socks on sale in a variety of sizes, price ranging from 16.79 to $46.39.

Lots of life jackets on sale, price range with the quality.  But really, how much is your life worth, or the those of the wife and kids?

That’s it so far, but they will be having daily specials from the 22nd of May through the 24th.  Might be worth to check out a day or two, or maybe they will spill some of the sales if  you call ahead.

Where to get Reef Runners

Monday, May 4th, 2009

As I got ready for the tournament last Saturday, I like lots of other folks studied the reports online coming off the lake.  What was working, what I could adapt and make work.  Lots of factors to consider with the winds, water conditions and clarity factors that currently exist in the lake.

One of the big reports was that running Reef Runner cranks were steadily producing.  That was over two weeks ago, so I wrote Reef Runner asking where I could get some of the custom colors.  Even though the website had the best prices on the old mainstays,  I wanted to go with what was working the best currently on the lake.  So I fired off an email.

A week and half later, I get an new catalog for 2009 and new price list.  Also included was a copy of my email with a hand written note, as to where I could get the cranks I wanted.  Xtackle.com  was the answer.  Unfortunately there was no way I was going to get an order sent in and shipped out in time for Saturday.  So this is going to be filed away for future reference.  Best part is that on orders over 100 bills, the shipping is only $5.95.

You might inquire as to why you would need a hundred bucks worth.  Hey you might not, but if you got together with a couple of buddies and say three of you got six each, that’s only 2 bucks a piece for shipping….not too shabby!

Pro Choice Fishing: Great Blades, BETTER Service

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

I love going to the dealer booths at the Michigan-Ohio Fishing Show held at the Fairgrounds the last two winters.  I always find something that I can use, and once in a while find something really good.  This year it was the booth with the guys from Pro Choice Fishing.

I mentioned yesterday about the “Purple Claw” blade that caught one of the fish we landed on Sunday.  That’s the place where I got it while walking around the Monroe Bank and Trust Expo Center that weekend. I know I dropped 40 bucks just in blades that day at their booth.  I even picked up some of the Claws that day, but as it turns out, not nearly enough.

Brent, the owner even mentioned while I was at the booth, that the Purple Claw was their best producer last year.  I had picked up four that day, and when I lost one after landing that fish Sunday, I thought I better load back up.  I even considered calling in the order while on the water, but didn’t have the number loaded in my cell phone.

So instead I waited till Monday morning and called Brent to make sure I wanted the ones with the copper blades for this weekend’s tournament. The website needs some reworking, somehow “bronze” was typed instead of copper.  So I ordered 12 in sized #5 blade, and 6 more for good measure in the #4 colorado blade size.

I emailed that I appreciated the help over the phone and for explaining the ordering process on the website.  Mentioned that I had a tourney on Saturday and how they had been right in their original suggestion back in February.

The best part is that I got a return phone call an hour later.  Brent explained to me that he didn’t know that I needed them for a tournament, and would make sure that the order would get to shipped to me that day.  That’s GREAT customer service, and another MICHIGAN company coming through for their state’s anglers.

Jann’s Netcraft: Nice Customer Feature

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

The last time you called one of the big box stores, how was it handled?  Did you get a busy signal, did the operator send you to the wrong department, the phone just ring on and on, or did you get some nugget that didn’t even understand your question?

Well, I discovered a really nice feature today while checking on the “out of stock” status on some beads from Jann’s Netcraft online today.  Its called “Live Help” and its found on the top right section of their customer service page.  I typed in my name, and with in seconds I had a very helpful person introducing herself, and promptly answered my questions.

It was a big help and a great feature for them to offer!

The 2009 Michigan-Ohio Sportfishing Expo…

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

… is just around the corner folks.  Brought to you again for the second year in a row by the members of the Huron Valley  Sportfishing Club , it will be held again at the Monroe B&T Expo Center located at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.  The dates are this February 14th (9am – 8pm) and 15th (9am-5pm).

Now the ladies will probably realize that one those days is St. Valentine’s Day,  while the guys will be sure to notice that is the same weekend as Michigan’s free fishing weekend.  Not a problem, girls its time to show the guys some appreciation,  and guys, you can take the gals ice fishing one day or the other.  Seems like a win win for the guys, but don’t forget the ladies who are just as dedicated to angling as any of the guys who will be coming to check out the latest gear for 2009.

Looking at all the Vendors who will be attending this year’s 2nd annual event I can see several that will garner my attention right off the bat.  I know the folks at DB Lures will be getting some of my money for the great blades they have for making my crawler harnesses,  some beads and I will probably breakdown and get some trolling spoons too.  Got to stop by and see Captain John Geer of Bulldog Charters.

Might have to razz him a bit, those don’t look like Ugly Stiks in those ladies’ hands while fishing on Bulldog One.  If you didn’t know it, Capt John is the creator of the “Clip Catcher” , a must have for those anglers running the big boards for walleye and salmon.

For the guys who run the downriggers walleye fishing or out on Michigan’s West Coast for salmon, you have to check out the Ridgeback Rattler downrigger weights.

Also looking forward to checking out the new spoons from Warrior Lures, after Fishlander’s demise last season, it was stated on their website that they would be producing many of Fishlander’s color patterns on their walleye spoons.

The good folks at Bi-State Marine  will be at the show, which is where I purchased my E-tech outboard last season for the Triton.  Never did have to add oil during the whole season!

For those who want to sit down and learn more info on fishing, there will be seminars  throughout the weekend on both days.  I will have to ask a certain young lady where is the big water walleye fishing seminar, hmmm.  But I will definitely sit down and learn some more about jigging and handlining in the Detroit River Saturday morning at 10 am.  Sunday at 2pm, the trolling for muskies seminar looks interesting, given by Capt Don Miller of Motor City Muskies.

Lots more to see, and probably buy too.  More blades, more beads, more spoons, more stuff for the boat, and who knows, maybe a new boat.  See you out there.

Hey, Your Bobbers Down!

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I actually borrowed that phrase from the website that sells Fiska and Little Atom products online,  YourBobbersDown.com .  If you aren’t familiar with the name or the ice fishing products available there online,  get acquainted quick if you take your ice fishing seriously.

I have been fishing with Fiskas for about five years now, and what you get is totally different than any other big name line-up of jigs available on the market today.  You get a small, but heavy jig.  Heavy because the jig is made of tungsten, small because you don’t need a ton of lead on the hook to gain the same weight.  That’s what you get in the Handpaint and Epoxy Jigs.

green2The Epoxy’s are some of my favorites, not only do they add a different look to the color scheme available, but they all glow too.  All but the black, but some parts on them do glow as well.  Green is one of my fav colors come winter time, and I really like the type of green they use on the Epoxy jig pictured here that I took from their website.

Jamie, the Head Honcho, operates just up US-23 over in Saline.  Just last night, the website was given a pretty impressive makeover, and it is up and running today.

Will give you a first timer’s helping hand if you are looking to buy.  The 3mm jigs are perfect for sight fishing those finicky gills and crappie.  4mm is a tightliner’s mainstay, and shoot up to 5mm for big crappie and perch fishing.

Visit the site, and if you want to see them up close your first time out, go to  your local Gander Mountain store for your best slection in the  metro area.  From last week, I know the Michigan stores are well stocked, and call ahead if you are heading to the Toledo store.

By far the best selection besides the website is available over in Brooklyn at Knutson’s Recreational Sales.  Don’t know how to get there?  Take M-50 west, cross over US-12 and go right into town. At the light, turn right onto Wampler’s Hwy and its two doors down on the right.  Behind the Big Boy on the corner.  Its a nice drive, and well worth the stop.

Review of Michigan’s Gander Mountain’s

gander6

I would have to conclude after my state retail tour that Gander Mountain as a chain has the 3rd best selection by area of all the stores that I visited.  Each store tries to cater to the angler in their area, and their wants and needs.  If I had to pick their top two stores in Michigan, it would fall on the store in Coldwater, and then Port Huron/Ft Gratiot near Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River.

Coldwater really stepped up and had one their nicest displays.  Bulk stacks of product, knowledgeable staff and everything in one central location.  Port Huron was a close second, display area was slightly smaller, but the staff was top notch, and they had everything the local angler could want for perch, which rules LSC during the winter.  Even the Taylor store which still had product coming in, as they were one of my first stops, had a decent display with their limited amount of room.

Review of Frank’s Ice Gear

Friday, December 26th, 2008

My second stop last Thursday was to Frank’s Great Outdoors , where walleye also dominates their winter set/displays in the store.  Pushed back are the blades and trolling gear used by anglers during the warmer months, upfront you will find everything needed for icing “eyes” during the winter. Once you go through the doors with the rack of ice rods, past the checkouts and bait tanks, its everything you could want for ice fishing.

franks11

You turn the corner into the main section of the store, and you are confronted with two rows back to back of the latest shanties available

franks1

franks2

They have all the big name flashers and fish finders available, including my favorite, Vexilar.  All the accessories you could want for your Vex right by the units on display.

franks4

franks3

The one thing Frank’s did better than any store I visited is what we call cross-merchandising.  If  you have your electronics on display as in this case, you get something from another department or area of the store that compliments those items.  You then display them right next to the electronics.  In this case it was the RAM mounts and electronic accessories on a rack nearby.  Its a good sales technique true, but also good for the customer.  If you are looking for something, you don’t have to walk all over the store to find it, and also makes it harder for you to forget an item you wanted to get in the first place.  In my case I wanted the RAM mount for having my Garmin right on the handlebar of the Polaris for easy viewing while traveling across the ice.  Much better than looking down with the unit around my neck, and trying to drive.

franks5

On the backside of the display you would have found all the power cables and accessories for your GPS needs.  Thought I grabbed a pic of that, but dropped the pooch on that one. There were were power and data cables on that side, honest.

On to the gear we like using for a second line in the water, a Michigan favorite the tip-up.  Actually there were lots of items on display to enhance the experience out on the ice.  Augers, extra blades, extra gas caps, clothing,  spuds and just about anything else you could possibly think of for gearing up this winter.

franks6

Course if you have all this gear already, the fun part is walking in and checking out all the lures on display for catching walleyes on Saginaw Bay. Also, if you plan on hitting Little Bay de Noc or Big Bay even for walleyes in the Upper Peninsula, Frank’s is the place for all things you could possibly need in the line jigs, spoons and swimbaits/jiggers.  Its on the way, you might as well schedule some time in your trip to get the right gear.

One of my favorite baits is the Buck-Shot Rattle Spoon from Northland, but then again, I am pretty much a spoon guy for catching walleyes to begin with!

franks9

If the swimbait like the new Puppet Minnow from Northland, the old standby Jiggin’ Rap or Salmo’s Chubby Darter is the type of bait you most prefer, they have them up there too.

franks10

Mixed in with another favorite spoon of mine, the Swedish Pimple, and the Jiggin’ Raps is the Power Flash from Luhr Jensen.  Its a type of light used to charge up your glow baits, and looks just like a flash camera attachment.  Yes it is the most expensive type glow charger on the market at $20 bucks or so, but you click once on one side of your lure, click again on the reverse side, and you are down the hole fishing.  The other types look like keychain ornaments that the banks hand out when you open a new account.  Back and forth, back and forth…ugh, they take too much time to charge the lure and are not nearly as effective.  Definitely worth the extra 10 to 15 bucks for the Power Flash which will last a lot longer.

franks7

And, as you walk back to the checkout area, you need to pick up some panfish jigs, they have them there too.  On the right hand side as you walk toward the counter, in front of the filler spools of line , are two sides of gill, crappie and perch jigs.  Remember what I said in an earlier post, if  you are spooling multiple reels, filler spools are the way to go for the best bang for your buck.

franks12

That wraps up my stop at Frank’s.  The guys up there are great, and no matter what level of ice angler you are,  they can show you what you need to make your trip on the bay or elsewhere a better experience.  If you get that kind of help in picking the right items and gaining a little knowledge in the process,  it makes it an easy decision to support a Michigan store where the money you spend, stays in the state and provides jobs.

Alrighty then, time to catch up!

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Its been short of a week since the last post while the website was being updated.  And if anything looks different on your side of the blog, my side is going to take a tutorial to figure out all the new bells and whistles, or even if I have access to them.

So in the meantime, its catch up time.  What have I been doing since the shutdown?  Actually wrapping up my around the state tour visiting all the major players in the outdoor world, doing some employee training and checking on sales of the most popular items in the fishing world.  My conclusion is this, all stores south of Lake St. Clair are severely lacking in the newest and bluest in the ice fishing realm.

I would have to say Frank’s ranks slightly higher than Jay’s, but probably too close to call, so its a tie for first place. Third place is also a tie between the Gander Mountain in Port Huron and Utica.  Actual location of the Utica Gander is right out in front of Selfridge, so call that Lake St. Clair area.

The stores ranked high because of their location, as well as cross merchandising their gear.  Everything ice fishing in one central area.  Frank’s caught me with the RAM mount for the Polaris for the GPS.  The mounts were on a small rack, with the power cables on the other side.  GPS units only a short distance away, next to the flashers……..and so on.  Will have a breakdown with pics from the trip soon!
