I havent tried the Slick Skin Matt, I remember when they originally sold for $249, next year it was $299, last time I even looked they were higher. Not sure what they are going for now, but back then they priced themselves out of my market :). Lots of friends told me the potato peeler was the way to go, when I looked them up online (even ebay) they were quite high. But when you can find them at a auction, I guess the price is right! 3min is flying!

Have you tried the slick skin fish scaler.I think it works alot better,I just sold my ssfs and bought a hobart 6115 potato peeler WOW I scaled 56 bluegills in 3 minutes and there wasnt a scale one to be found.I got tired of waiting 20 min for 30 perch in the ssfs.
                                                                    Matt

Hello Matt, saw this over on the W.E.T. forum and answered over there too. Had three in the box, and two more that got off. One that crossed two lines and made a real mess. Ended up just cutting the lines and doing a quick retie. Take care,

I knew I forgot part of your question as soon as I headed out the door to go perch fishing today, I have tried a certain type of hook tying tool, the metal tube with the plastic molded piece. It works, but takes way too much time for me.

Years ago Joe I used to go up in the spring and muskie fish while they were on the American side, but its been years. Would like to get up there during the ice season and get some perch though. Horizontal vs Vertical, depends on the fish, would say vertical though based on last years results. Only long shanks I use are the gold hooks, do use some short shanks from Mustad, and never fell for the red hook trap. Seriously do not think it matters. Colors, a single glow bead works great right above the hook.
