Why the Food is So Good @ Monroe County Community College

Posted on 31 August 2007 under Restaurant Chit-Chat, School Lunches

This was my lunch today. I picked up this Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich at the cafeteria in the ’A’ building at Monroe County Community College. The steak was nice and hot, covered with grilled onions and green bell pepper, with melted pepper-jack cheese, and served in a grilled steak roll. The French Fries were also excellent … nice and crispy on the outside, with tender potato on the inside. This is college cafeteria food? You may be wondering, why does this look so good? Well, lemme tell ya’ why …

For the past couple years, the folks at the Frog Leg Inn in Erie have had a “day job”. That’s right, they also run the Frog Leg Inn Bistro at Monroe County Community College, where students, faculty, staff and visitors can get seriously good food at a decent price. This isn’t frozen food that’s simply re-heated in the microwave! There’s an actual grill where most of the cooking is done, and the fries in the above photo came right out of the deep fryer. In this photo, you can see Catherine cooking a couple sandwiches on the grill for a lunchtime order. There are also some interesting specials, such as today’s Coconut-Encrusted Tilapia with roasted potatoes, a roll and a small pop, all for $5.50. There was an Italian Panini with French Fries and a small pop for $5.25, and even a bowl of Italian Wedding Soup for $2.33. They also have a full salad bar, many other sandwiches, and a full selection of beverages, including the Sobe green tea I washed down my Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich with.

If you or yours are headed to school at Monroe County Community College this fall, don’t hesitate about heading to the cafeteria. You might just find something at the Bistro that you’d like. Oh, in the below photo … those things in the bin on the right nearest the camera … handmade potato chips … yup, go getcha some …

Just another reason why MCCC is a great thing in our community!

I told my daughter I would give this a shot. She attended a series of cooking classes at MCCC in August. The only problem was that she didn’t get to attend the last class due to a school golf match. She was sorry she missed it because she didn’t get the recipes that Catherine (from the Frog Leg Inn) gave out. I told her maybe I could find out from you if she could still get them. Any ideas? BTW, she thought Cedric was cool.
    Thanks.

Cyndi, email me your daughter’s name, dave@micuisine.com and I’ll ask Catherine in the morning.

    Yeah, then there’s Cedric. ;-)
